Abstract
A gasket bead is formed from resilient elastomeric material. The material contains 0.5 to 5% by weight of aramid fibres, the fibres having a diameter of 5 to 20 microns and a length of 0.25 to 5mm.
Description
In a fourth illustrative example of the invention, the third illustrative example was repeated except that the quantity of the fibres was increased to 2% by weight. The tear strength at 800c was 7.8 N/mm and at 150 c was 4.3
N/mm. The compression set was 54.8.
Claims (8)
- CLAIMS 1 A gasket bead formed from resilient elastomeric material, wherein the material contains 0.5 to 5% by weight of aramid fibres, the fibres having a diameter of 5 to 20 microns and a length of 0.25 to 5mm.
- 2 A gasket bead according to claim 1, wherein the material contains between 0.5 and 2% by weight of said fibres.
- 3 A bead according to either one of claims 1 and 2, wherein said fibres have a diameter of 12 microns.
- 4 A bead according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the fibres have a length of 1.5 to 3mm.
- 5 A bead according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the elastomeric material is a silicone rubber.
- 6 A bead according to claim 5, wherein the elastomeric material also contains a coupling agent acting to couple the fibres to the material.
- 7 A bead according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the material is a fluoroelastomer.
- 8 A bead substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of the illustrative examples described hereinbefore.
