Abstract

233,221. British-American Laundry Machinery Co., Ltd., (American Launadry Machinery Co.). Sept. 10, 1924. Driving.-A centrifugal extractor is provided with means for connecting and disconnecting the source of power to the basket; the disconnection effects a braking action on the basket and the brakes may also be independently applied by the operator. The basket spindle 3 has a pulley 4 for the driving- belt 5 which passes round the idlers 6 and the drive pulley 7 fixed upon the shaft 8. Fast and loose pulleys 11, 10 are also carried by the shaft 8 and the driving-belt 12 can be shifted from one to the other by means of the rod 13 operated by the handle 15 on the spindle 16. An arm on the spindle is connected by a link 19 to one end of a bell-crank lever 20 the other end of which is connected to the rod 22 loosely secured to an arm 24 on the spindle 25. Another arm fixed to the spindle 25 is pivoted between links 28 which with the links 29 form a toggle. The links 29 are connected to the junction of toggle levers 33. 34, the latter 34 of which is adjustable in length by means of a screw thread and is connected at its lower end to the brake lever 38. When the machine is running the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, and in order to stop running the handle 15 is operated to shift the belt 12 from the fast pulley 11 to the loose pulley 10. This motion operates the mechanism to straighten the toggle 33, 34, to depress the brake lever 38 and to apply the brake, the parts then being in the position shown in Fig. 3. By depressing the release treadle 44, the operator can break the toggle, independently of the belt-shifting means, to allow manual rotation of the basket for loading. The machine can then be started by the movement of the belt to the fast pulley by operation of the handle 15. It is also possible with the parts occupying the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 to straighten the double toggle by depressing the lever 38 and so apply the brake and shift the belt to the loose pulley.
