Abstract

A removable head support has a body 10 and adjustable side supports 14. In use, the head support is releasably secured to a vehicle head restraint with the side supports providing support for a sleeping passenger.

Description

-I- DEFASTENABLE HEAD SIDE SUPPORT This Invention relates to a
Defastenable Head Side Support.
2331454 Head Restraints are well known vehicle seat attachments, comprising a padded reinforced cushion, adjustable in height so that the top of the head restraint is level with the base of the skull. The head restraint while protecting the neck against injury can do so only if the head is in line with the restraint at the time of impact so that the the head is restrained from moving back at velocity. The head restraint will be less effective if the head is not in line with the restraint.
According to the present invention there is provided a Defastenable Head Side Support comprising a Flexible Body in the form of a box with an open base, means of Releasably Securing the body over the Head Restraint, the body being adapted to be slipped on or off the head restraint from the top. One side of the body provided with movable Side Supports fixed to the body, which is situated at the front of the restraint when the body is secured over the restraint.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig 1 shows in front perspective, the Defastenable Head Side Support in position on the head restraint.
Fig 2 Illustrates the Defastenable Head Side Support positioned over the head restraint, prior to securing.
Referring to the drawing the Defastenable Head Side Support comprises a Body 10 Fig 2 in the form of a flexible box with an open base. The body is provided to be pulled over the head restraint 9 Fig 2 from the top in the direction of the arrows 5 Fig 2, is Releasably secured over the restraint by for example a Zip Fastener(s) a Tape Fastener(s), Elastic or similar means (not shown). Once fastened the body fits snugly and tightly over the head restraint taking the shape and contours of the head restraint and functions as an integral part of the head restraint. The movable Side Supports 14 Fig I are movably joined to the base 12 Fig 2 by means of a hinge(s), a ball and socket or similar means (not shown). The base is fixed to the body either by mechanical means by, for example rivets, bolts (not shown) or by non-mechanical means by, for example chemical bonding(not shown). To provide a mechanically strong platform for fixing the base to the 1 body, the inside of the body at the front is provided with suitably contoured rigid reinforcement by,for example a metal plate a moulded plastic sheet or similar means (not shown) which reinforcement fits in with the contours of the front of the head restraint.
The movable side supports 14 Fig 1 move in an arc such that when pushed back fully lie along the head restraint and when pushed forward fully lie perpendicular to the head restraint. The movable side supports 14 Fig 1 and the base 12 Fig 2 are fully padded and covered for comfort and safety.
When secured over the head restraint the movable side supports can be moved in an arc as required by the passenger(s) providing support to the head on both sides of the restraint while remaining comfortable. There is very little likelihood of the head slipping away from the head restraint should the passenger fall asleep thereby contributing to comfort and safety.
To remove the Defastenable Head Side Support the fastener(s) is(are) released and the body pulled off over the top of the head restraint.

Claims (12)

1 A defastenable head side support comprising a flexible body in the form of a box Mth an open base, means of releasably secuiring the body over the head restraint the body being adapted to being slipped on or off the head restraint from the top. One side of the body provided with movable side supports fixed to the body which is situated at the front of the restraint when the body is secured over the restraint.
2 A defastenable head side support as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the body is flexible to enable it to fit snugly and tightly over the head restraint taking the shape and contours of the head restraint once fastened to enable it to function as an integral part of the head restraint.
3 A defastenable head side support as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the body is provided with at least one fastener.
4 A defastenable head side support as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein fastening means are provided on the body to prevent the body from slipping off the head restraint.
A defastenable head side support as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the movable side supports are independently joined to either end of a base by means of at least one hinge or similar means, to provide a movable joint.
6 A defastenable head side support as claimed in Claim 5 wherein the movable joints are sufficiently tight to provide resistence to pressure, such that the side supports provide adequate support to the head, while being independently movable when sufficient pressure is applied.
7 A defastenable head side support as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the movable side supports independently move in a 90 degree arc The side supports moving from a position parallel to the head restraint to a position at 90 degrees to the head restraint.
8 A defastenable head side support as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the base is securely fixed to the flexible body.
9 A defastenable head side support as claimed in Claim 8 wherein suitable reinforcement is provided to the inside front of the body to provide for fixing the base.
A defastenable head side support as claimed in claim 7 wherein the movable side supports and the base are sufficiently padded and covered aesthetically for comfort and safety.
11 A defastenable head side support as claimed in claim 10 wherein the covering is of flexible woven material.
12 A defastenable head side support substantially as described herein with reference to Fig 1 and Fig 2 of the accompanying drawing.
