Abstract
A wall mounted light fitting comprising an on/off switch (16, fig 3) operated by a pull cord 17 which passes through an elongate tubular stem 5. The stem may be threaded to receive means 9 for tightening a mounting plate 8 adapted to support a shade against the fitting.
Description
DESCRIPTION
A WALL MOUNTED LIGHT FITTING
The present invention relates to a wall mounted light fitting and more specifically to a wall mounted light fitting of the type which comprises an on/off switch operated by a pull cord.
Wall mounted light fittings are known which comprise an on/off switch operated by a pull cord. The switch is usually mounted adjacent to the socket in which the electric light bulb is received and to a dual in line connector which facilitates connection of the light fitting to a mains cable. A lamp shade is secured to the light fitting by means of a securing plate which is screwed onto the bottom of the light fitting to clamp the bottom edge of the lamp shade therebetween.
In these known light fittings the pull cord which operates the on/off switch simply hangs down from the switch through a through hole in the bottom of the light fitting and through a through hole in the securing plate. These through holes are offset from the screw securing the securing plate to the light fitting. Not only is this aesthetically unpleasing, but the pull cord is prone to snagging at the point where it passes through the gap between the bottom of the light fitting and the securing plate, and past the lower rim of the light fitting. Moreover, the pull cord is prone to fraying on the edges of the through hole in the securing plate (this is usually made of thin sheet metal and the edges of the through hole are, therefore, relatively sharp.)
It is an object of the present invention to provide a wall mounted light fitting in which the problems associated with shown wall mounted light fittings and referred to hereinbefore are obviated or at least substantially mitigated.
According to the present invention there is provided a wall mounted light fitting comprising an on/off switch operated by a pull cord characterised in that an elongate tubular stem is provided in the lower end of the light fitting through which the pull cord passes.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the elongate tubular stem is externally threaded to receive a correspondingly internally threaded nut or decorative knob which serves to tighten a securing plate mounted on the stem against the lower end of the light fitting.
In an alternative embodiment of the present invention the elongate tubular stem is internally threaded to receive a correspondingly externally threaded bolt which serves to secure a securing plate mounted on the bolt against the lower end of the light fitting.
In both embodiments the securing plate serves to secure a lamp shade to the light fitting after the fashion of a known wall mounted light fitting.
A through hole is provided in the decorative knob and in the bolt to allow the pull cord to pass therethrough.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a rear perspective view of a light fitting according to the present invention coupled with a lamp shade;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the light fitting shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view of the compartment in the light fitting shown in Fig. 1 housing the on/off switch with the cover removed.
Referring to the drawings the light fitting comprises a plastics moulded body 1 which defines a compartment 2 having a removable cover 3, a back plate 4 and a tubular externally threaded stem 5. Through holes 6 are provided in the back plate 4 through which screws are passed to secure the light fitting to a wall.
A screw threaded socket 7 for receiving an electric light bulb (not shown) is carried by the moulded body 1. This socket may, of course, be substituted by one with a bayonet fitting if appropriate.
A securing plate 8 is mounted, by means of a through hole, on the stem 5 and is held in place by means of a decorative knob 9 which has an externally threaded hole in it by means of which it can be screwed onto the stem 5. The plate 8 has a vertically upright lip 10 around the front facing perimeter thereof behind which is received the lower rim 11 of a lamp shade 12. By tightening the knob 9 onto the stem 5 to its full extent the lower rim 11 of the lamp shade 12 is effectively clamped between the securing plate 8 and the moulded body 1, thereby securing it in place.
The electrical contacts (not shown) in the socket 7 are connected to short lengths of insulated wire 13 and 14 which lead into the compartment 2 within the moulded body 1. One of the two wires 13 goes directly to a dual in line electrical connector 15. The other 14 goes to the electrical connector 15 via an on/off switch 16 mounted in the compartment 2. In use, the dual in line connector 15 is connected to a mains power supply. A slot is provided in the compartment cover 3 to facilitate the passage of the mains cable into the compartment. The switch 16 is operated by a pull cord 17 which hangs down from the operating arm of the switch through the through hole in the stem 5 and through a hole in the knob 9.
By virtue of the pull cord 17 being guided down through the stem 5 and the knob 9 the light fitting according to the present invention presents a much neater and more aesthetically pleasing appearance than is the case with conventional light fittings of this type in which the pull cord passes through a hole in the securing plate. Moreover, in the light fitting according to the present invention the cord is less likely to become snagged or fray as it frequently does in conventional light fittings of this type.
Claims (5)
