Description

"Ceiling Decorations" This invention relates to ceiling decorations.
Various types of ceiling decoration are commercially available, ranging from patterned and/or textured wallpaper to shaped decorative items, such as coving and centrepiece mouldings made of plaster or polystyrene, for example. However most ceilings incorporate at least one ceiling rose from which a light fitting is suspended by means of a flex, and the attachment of ceiling decorations in the vicinity of the ceiling rose can present certain problems. As is well known, the ceiling rose contains the electrical connectors for connecting the light fitting to the electrical light circuit, and the fitting of some ceiling decorations requires disconnection of the light fitting from the ceiling rosehnd subsequent reconnection after fitting of the ceiling decoration. This can be a difficult operation for an unskilled person to effect. Alternatively the ceiling decoration must be applied around the ceiling rose in which case the ceiling rose will remain visible after fitting of the ceiling decoration which may compromise the appearance of the ceiling decoration.
It is an object ofthe invention to provide a ceiling decoration which can be fitted to a ceiling in the vicinity of a ceiling rose in a straightforward manner and which presents an attractive appearance.
According to the present invention there is provided a ceiling decoration comprising a display sheet having a decorative pattern on one surface and arranged to be attached by its opposite surface to a ceiling, and a ceiling rose cover adapted to be positioned within a portion of the display sheet and to overlie a ceiling rose on the ceiling when the display sheet is attached to the ceiling, the ceiling rose cover preferably having an aperture for a flex connecting a suspended light fitting to the ceiling rose.
Such a ceiling decoration may be fitted over the ceiling rose without requiring disconnection ofthe flex from the ceiling rose (although temporary disconnection ofthe light fitting from the flex may be required), and is capable of presenting an attractive decorative design surrounding the light fitting, particularly if the ceiling rose cover is coloured or patterned so as to match the decorative pattern on the display sheet. The display sheet may be circular or shaped according to the outline of a required display item, e.g. a shield, a crest, an emblem of leaves or animals, etc. It is envisaged that the display sheet will be particularly suitable for displaying an emblem of a football club or some other sports organisation, or an image of a person or persons associated with such a club or organisation.
In one embodiment ofthe invention the ceiling rose cover has a peripheral flange which is trapped between the display sheet and the ceiling when the display sheet is attached to the ceiling, or which is embedded in the display sheet. t Alternatively the ceiling rose cover may be formed integrally with the display sheet or may be fixedly attached to the display sheet, or may even be adapted to be separately connected to the ceiling, the ceiling rose or the display sheet itself during fitting of the ceiling decoration to the ceiling.
In a development of the invention the ceiling rose is formed with an opening of sufficient size to enable a standard light fitting for detachably receiving a light bulb to be passed therethrough, and a cover piece is provided to substantially close off the opening after passing of the light fitting therethrough whilst providing said aperture for the flex connecting the light fitting to the ceiling rose.
The invention also provides a ceiling decoration comprising a display sheet having a decorative pattern on one surface, and mounting means for attaching the display sheet to the ceiling by way of its opposite surface such that a portion of the display sheet overlies a ceiling rose on the ceiling and a flex connecting a suspended light fitting to the ceiling rose passes through an aperture in said portion.
The mounting means may comprise one or more suspension elements for freely suspending the display sheet from the ceiling, or one or more spacers having opposite faces fixedly connectable to the ceiling and the display sheet. Alternatively, if the ceiling rose is at least partially recessed into the ceiling, the mounting means may be adapted to attach the display sheet directly to the ceiling.
The invention further provides a ceiling decoration comprising a display sheet having a decorative pattern on one surface, and magnetic mounting means for attaching the display sheet to the ceiling in a detachable manner.
For example the magnetic mounting means may comprise a plurality of magnetic members attachable to the ceiling, and a plurality of magnetisable members attached to the display sheet and detachably connectable to the magnetic members on the ceiling by magnetic attraction.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vertical section through a first embodiment of ceiling decoration in accordance with the invention; Figures 2 and 3 show a vertical section through a ceiling rose cover of a second embodiment, and an end view of part of the ceiling rose cover; Figures 4, 5 and 6 show third, fourth and fifth embodiments of the invention in vertical section; Figures 7 and 8 show two alternative arrangements usable in the third and fourth embodiments; Figure 9 shows a sixth embodiment in vertical section; and Figure 10 is a vertical section through a variant of the firstembodiment.
In each of the embodiments of ceiling decoration in accordance with the invention to be described below, the ceiling decoration incorporates a display sheet by means of which one or more images is displayed Generally the display sheet will be a sheet of cardboard which possesses the advantages of firmness, flexibility, lightweight, ease of shaping and fixing, and low cost. However, in certain special applications the sheet may be of hardboard, plastics, metal or wood. The size or shape of the sheet may be varied to suit the particular image to be displayed. For example, the sheet may be circular, having a diameter of about 50 cm and a depth of about 0.5 cm, or may be shaped to match the outline of an emblem of a football club having approximate dimensions of 250 cm x 200 cm x 4.0 cm. The image may be applied to the display sheet by painting or printing and/or by being embossed thereon.
In the first embodiment of Figure 1, the ceiling decoration 1 comprises a display sheet 2 having a decorative pattern on its lower surface 3, and a circular ceiling rose cover 4 having a peripheral flange 5 and a central aperture 6. The ceiling rose cover 4 is fitted over a ceiling rose 7 on the ceiling 8, and the flex 9 from the ceiling rose 7 is threaded through the aperture 6, generally after removal of the light fitting (not shown) from the end ofthe flex 9. The display sheet 2 is placed over the ceiling rose cover 4 so that the ceiling rose cover 4 extends through a matching circular cut out 10 in the display sheet 2, and the display sheet 2 is then fixed to the ceiling 8 by any suitable fixing means, such as screws (which may be provided with colour coordinated plastics caps) or an adhesive, in order to trap the peripheral flange 5 between the display sheet 2 and the ceiling 8 to hold the ceiling rose cover 4 in position. No separate connection step is required for attaching the ceiling rose cover 4 to the ceiling rose 8 or display sheet 2 in this embodiment.
The ceiling rose cover 4 may be transparent, plain, coloured or image coordinated and may be of any required shape, e.g. flat topped, domed, pyramidal, castellated, oval or of a non-standard shape to match the image displayed. The peripheral flange 5 may be continuous or discontinuous around the periphery of the cover 4, and may, if required, be fixed to the ceiling 8 or display sheet 2 by being glued, taped, screwed, etc. Furthermore, in a non-illustrated development, a further peripheral flange is provided either flush with the top of the cover 4 or at a location intermediate the top ofthe cover 4 and the flange 5. The further flange may be rigid or flexible (by being made of rubber, for example) and may serve to overlie the lower surface 3 of the display sheet 2 in order to provide a neater finish. During assembly different sections of the display sheet 2 may be slotted between the two flanges on the cover 4. If required, the further flange may be in the form of an annular member which is detachably connectible to the cover 4.
The second embodiment of Figures 2 and 3 is generally similar to the first embodiment except that the ceiling rose cover 4 is provided with an opening 12 of sufficient size to enable a standard light fitting (not shown) for receiving a light bulb on the end ofthe flex 9 to be passed therethrough (after removal of the light bulb), so that the cover 4 can be fitted over the ceiling rose 7 without requiring the fitting to be removed from the flex 9. In this case, after passing the fitting and the flex through the opening 12, a generally annular cover piece 13 may be fitted over the flex internally of the cover 4 in order to substantially close off the opening 12. The cover piece 13 is provided with a central aperture 14 for the flex and a radial slot 15 for introduction of the flex into the aperture 14 from one side. Both the cover 4 and the cover piece 13 may be made of a suitable plastics material.
In each of the above described embodiments the display sheet 2 is formed with a precut opening 10, which is generally of circular shape, for receiving the cover 4, or alternatively is formed with a perforated or marked portion which must be removed or cut out to form the required opening prior to fitting. Whilst the display sheet 2 is shown in the drawings as being substantially two-dimensional, it may also be three-dimensional so as to have a contoured profile at least in parts. Furthermore, if necessary, the display sheet 2 may be supplied in a number of sections which may be assembled together on fitting to the ceiling, with abutting edges being optionally taped together using transparent or colour coordinated tape.
In further embodiments ofthe invention the display sheet 2 is not provided with an opening or with a ceiling rose cover fitting within such an opening. Thus, in the third embodiment of Figure 4, the display sheet 2 is suspended from the ceiling 8 by means of suspension elements 20 which may each comprise, for example hook screwed into the ceiling 8 and a corresponding eyelet screwed into the display sheet 2. In the fourth embodiment of Figure 5, the display sheet 2 is attached to the ceiling 8 by spacer blocks 21 having opposite flees connected to the ceiling 8 and the display sheet 2, for example by means of glue or adhesive tape or by screwing (in which case colour coordinated plastics caps may be provided for the screws). In each of the embodiments of Figures 4 and 5, the display sheet 2 is positioned so as to be clear of the ceiling rose 7 In the fifth embodiment of Figure 6, the ceiling rose 7 is embedded in the ceiling 8 so that the display sheet 2 may be surface mounted on the ceiling 8, for example by means of glue or adhesive tape or by screwing.
In each ofthe embodiments of Figures 4, 5 and 6, the flex 9 extends through an aperture 22 in the display sheet 2. Furthermore Figures 7 and 8 show two alternative arrangements by which a grommet 23 or 24 may be fitted within the aperture 22, either from above (Figure 7) or below (Figure 8), in order to provide a neat finish. The grommet 23 or 24 may be made of plastics material and may be coloured to match the image.
In the sixth embodiment of Figure 9, the display sheet 2 is attachable to the ceiling 8, either in the vicinity ofthe ceiling rose or elsewhere on the ceiling, by magnetic fixings 30 each of which comprises magnetic members 31 having screwthreaded parts fixed to the ceiling, for example by being screwed into plugs 32 fitted into pre-drilled holes in the ceiling, and magnetisable members 33 fixed to the display sheet 2 and connectable to the magnet members 30 by magnetic attraction. It will be appreciated that such an arrangement enables the display sheet 2 to be easily removed and replaced by a fresh display sheet if required, for example to enable the displayed image to be changed.
Figure 10 shows a light fitting 35 to which a light bulb 36 is connected, and a lampshade 37 suspended from the ceiling rose 7 by the flex 9 in the embodiment of Figure 1, so as to illuminate the image on the display sheet 2 from below. In a further, non-illustrated embodiment a light fitting may be positioned between the ceiling and the display sheet in order to provide backlighting of the image on the display sheet.
Alternatively the light fitting may be connected to the display sheet itself, for example by means of magnetic fittings, in order to extend through an opening in the display sheet or in order to project downwardly from the display sheet by being surface mounted thereon.
