Abstract

A sheet or block (10) of fibrous or particulate insulating material is covered over at least its major sufaces (11, 12) and side edges by woven material (13), such as stockinette or muslin, to prevent escape of fibres or particles into the air during handling. Alternatively a coating may be applied, or the cover comprise non-woven material, plastics or other non-pervious sheeting.

Description

INSULATION MATERIAL This invention relates to improvements in insulation material.
Insulation material for use in roof, loft and general purpose etc. insulation of buildings for example, is normally provided in the form of rolled sheets, of various thicknesses and are mainly composed of fibrous materials Handling, laying and cutting this material generally causes considerable fibrous or particulate air-borne dust, requiring the use of face masks, and for prolonged exposure, respiratory apparatus.
An object of this invention is to provide insulation material wherein the tendency to produce dust is substantially reduced, both during the laying process and in general handling and when the insulation may be moved, or disturbed for maintenance, etc According to the invention, at least the major surfaces of a sheet of insulation material is covered with a material which inhibits the escape of fibrous or particulate dust-forming material The covering material may be a film, paper, close-woven or mesh material, and may be plastic sheeting, muslin, stockinette or any such material which would act to reduce the dispersal of fibres.
The covering material may be a film or coating which is applied to the insulation material for example by spraying.
The edge surfaces of the insulation material are preferably also covered.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, which is a partly cross-sectional perspective view of a body of insulation material according to the invention.
A sheet of insulation material according to the invention comprises a body or core 10 composed of fibrous, particulate, or foamed insulation material, such as matted and/or resin bonded glass or mineral fibres, for example The core 10 is covered on both major surfaces 11,12 and on its longitudinal and end edge surfaces by a cover or stocking 1 3 of a close woven mesh material such as stockinette.
This cover inhibits the escape of fibres or particles from the core 10 so that handling, laying and cutting the material can be carried in an atmosphere with a considerably reduced dust content, so that the wearing of face masks becomes an advisory precaution rather than a prerequisite when working with the material As an alternative the covering material 13 may be sheet formed of paper or a film of a synthetic plastics material such as polythene or polypropylene, although care in this case must be taken not to rupture the film. Woven materials are preferred, as they are less prone to tearing, and will retain the insulation better when receiving staples, clips, clamps or the like, during cutting of insulation.
In another alternative, the covering material comprises a film or coating of a plastics material which has been applied to the core 10 by spraying, or by another method of application, such as painting or liquid application with a doctor blade, the film or coating setting or drying in place upon the core.

Claims (8)

1. A sheet of insulation material, at least the major surfaces of which are covered with a material which inhibits the escape of fibrous or particulate dust-forming material.
2. An insulation material according to claim 1 wherein the covering material forms a cover which encloses not only the major surfaces of the sheet of insulation material, but also at least the longitudinal edge surfaces of the sheet.
3. An insulation material according to claim I or 2 wherein the cover is formed by a film or coating which is applied to the insulation material by spraying.
4. An insulation material to claim 1 or 2 wherein the cover comprises a sheet material selected from the group comprising a non-pervious film, paper, close woven or mesh material.
5. An insulation material according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the cover is a sheet material selected from the group comprising a plastics sheet, muslin, stockinette, or other woven or nonwoven textile material.
6. Insulation material comprising a sheet or block of fibrous of particulate material covered with a film or coating applied over at least the major surfaces of the sheet or block.
7. Insulation material comprising a sheet or block of fibrous or particulate material wherein the sheet or block is covered with a stocking of close woven mesh material.
8. A sheet or block of insulation material provided with a cover substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
