Abstract

A moss-free hanging basket has an outer skin and and inner skin which engage with one another and can be rotated relative to each other so that holes cut out of both skins can be fully opened to allow insertion of large - rooted plants and then partially closed in order to retain soil when it is subsequently added. The skins are moulded from plastics material.

Description

MOSS-FREE HANGING BASKET
This invention relates to a moss-free, soil-retaining hanging basket for horticultural plants.
Hanging baskets for the display of horticultural plants conventionally consist of open lattices which require linings of moss or plastic to prevent leakage of soil.
Large-rooted plants cannot be inserted through the moss-lined sides without the strong likelihood of the roots being irreparably damaged.
According to the present invention there is provided a moss-free hanging basket comprising moulded plastic inner and outer skins, both with a number of large holes cut out of them, and a means of rotating the inner skin so that its holes are either completely aligned with those of the outer skin or so positioned as to partially close off the holes of the outer skin.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the following drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the moss-free hanging basket with inner and outer holes aligned, Figure 2 illustrates the moss-free hanging basket with the outer holes partially closed off by the body ofthe inner skin; Figure 3 illustrates a view inside the inner skin of the basket with the handle by which the inner skin is rotated visible; Figure 4 illustrates a view inside the outer skin, showing the stud with which the slotted cut-out of the inner skin engages; Figure 5 shows a view of the inner skin in perspective; Figure 6 shows a view of the outer skin in perspective.
Referring to the drawings the moss-free hanging basket comprises an outer skin 1 and an inner skin 2, a handle 3 being moulded onto the inner skin and the inner skin secured loosely to the outer skin by means of a slotted cut-out 4 engaging astud 5 attached to the inner base of the outer skin. Holes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,13, 14,15,16,17,18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 are cut out of both outer and inner skins as illustrated in Fig 3 and Fig 4.
In order to insert large-rooted plants into the moss-free hanging basket and enable them to trail through the sides of the basket the holes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,15, 16, 17, 18, 19,20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 in both the outer skin 1 and the inner skin 2 are aligned in the fully-open position Fig 1 by rotating the inner skin 2 with the handle 3.
The holes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 in the outer skin are partially closed by rotating the inner skin 2 by means of the handle 3, the slotted cut-out 4 moving over the stud 5 until the position illustrated in Fig 2 is attained. The plant roots are thus secured within the moss-free hanging basket and soil can be added to the inner skin 2 without it falling through the holes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 in the outer skin 1.

Claims (5)

  1. CLAIMS 1 A moss-free hanging basket comprising moulded plastic inner and outer skins, both with a number of large holes cut out of them, and a means of rotating the inner skin so that its holes are either completely aligned with those ofthe outer skin or so positioned as to partially close off the holes in the outer skin.
  2. 2 A moss-free hanging basket as claimed in Claim 1 wherein a handle is attached to the inner skin to provide a means of rotating the inner skin.
  3. 3 A moss-free hanging basket as claimed in Claims 1 or Claim 2 wherein a stud is moulded to the outer skin to provide means of engagement with the inner skin.
  4. 4 A moss-free hanging basket as claimed in Claim 3 wherein a slotted cutout in the inner skin provides means of engagement between the handle of the inner skin and the stud of the outer skin.
  5. 5 A moss-free hanging basket substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-6 of the accompanying drawing.
