Abstract
A splash shield (1) for gathering the water mist flying from a vehicle rotating tyre for condensing such mist into water comprises several essentially vertically extending ridge-shaped splash and water-mist guiding surfaces (2) directed towards the wheel of the vehicle. The guiding surfaces (2) are so arranged in relation to one another that between their lower edges (3), a gap (4) is formed for directing the splash and mist into a channel space (5) situated behind the guiding surfaces (2). Additionally, at each gap (4) there is provided a ridge (6) in the channel for directing the splash and mist. The splash shield comprises two or more elements (1', 1") joined to one another with snap-connection members (7,B) in the ridges (6).
Description
SPLASH SHIELD OF A VEHICLE
This invention is related to a splash shield of a vehicle for gathering the water mist flying from a rotating tyre and for condensing such mist into water, which splash shield will be fastened to the fender or the flash slap and which splash shield comprises several essentially vertically extending ridge-shaped splash and water-mist guiding surfaces directed toward the wheel of the vehicle, which guiding surfaces are so arranged in relation to one another that between their lower edges a gap is formed for directing the splash and mist into a channel space situated behind the guiding surfaces, whereby additionally at each gap there is provided a ridge in the channel.
A part like the above-mentioned splash shield is usually most advantageously built by utilizing extrusion moulding.
To manufacture a relatively wide splash shield for instance from plastic by extrusion moulding is, however, technically difficult, and the tools required are very expensive.
T ask of the invention is to provide a splash shield with manufacturing costs as low as possible.
In accordance with the invention, this task is accomplished by and the splash shield is characterized in that the splash shield comprises two or more constituent elements joined to one another, with each constituent element including one or several ridge-shaped splash and water-mist guiding surfaces, and in that, to join the constituent elements to one another, in each constituent element the opposite edge portions running parallel to the ridge-shaped guiding surfaces are provided with snapconnection members.
The constituent elements used in a splash shield according to the invention can be simply and at a low cost manufactured by extrusion moulding. Owing to the snapconnection members in the constituent elements, a sufficient number of constituent elements can be quickly joined next to each other to build a splash shield of desired width. The joining operation can be easily automatized.
In the following, the invention will be explained in further detail, with reference being made to the attached drawing, which shows an advantageous exemplary embodiment of a splash shield according to the invention.
The vehicle splash shield shown in the drawing, which as a whole is referred to by the number 1, is meant for gathering the water mist flying from a rotating tyre and for condensing such mist into water. The splash shield 1 will be fastened to a fender or a flash slap. The splash shield 1 comprises several essentially vertically extending ridge-shaped splash and water-mist guiding surfaces 2 directed toward the wheel of the vehicle.
The guiding surfaces 2 are so arranged in relation to one another that between their lower edges 3 a gap 4 is formed for directing the splash and mist into a channel space 5 situated behind the guiding surfaces 2. Additionally, at each gap 4 there is provided a ridge 6 in the channel for directing the splash and mist.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in the drawing, the splash shield 1 comprises two identical constituent elements 1', 1'' joined to each other. The number of the constituent elements will naturally be selected according to the requirements in each case, to get a desired width for the splash shield 1. Each constituent element 1', 1 includes one or several - two in the example shown in the drawing - ridge-shaped splash and water-mist guiding surfaces 2.
To join the constituent elements 1', 1'' to each other, in each constituent element the opposite edge parts running parallel to the ridge-shaped guiding surfaces 2 are provided with snap-connection members 7, 8, with which the constituent elements can in a known way be easily joined to one another by pressing the snap-connection members into engagement with each other.
The snap-connection members 7, 8 are advantageously arranged at the outermost ridges 6 of each constituent element 1', 1'', and most suitably in such a way that the female part 7 of the snap-connection members 7, 8 is formed inside the ridge 6, the open side of the female part 7 being directed away from the wheel of the vehicle.
In the example shown in the drawing, the female part 7 is triangular in cross-section, whereby there is a gap 9 formed in the middle of the base of the triangle. When a male part 8, which is comparably formed as a triangle, is pressed in through the gap 9, the parts 7, 8 get interlocked. As far as their section profile is concerned, the female part 7 and the male part 8 extend unchanged over the whole length of the constituent element 1 or 1' The snap-connection members 7, 8 are formed as parts integrated with the constituent element 1', 1'' of the splash shield 1, whereby the constituent element can be completed by means of one single work operation, i.e.
extrusion moulding.
If need be, the snap connection can be secured by means of a glued or welded joint, to prevent the connection from opening.
A splash shield according to the invention is built by arranging a necessary number of extrusion-moulded constituent elements with suitable dimensions next to one another, partly overlapping, in such a way that the snapconnection members 7,8 can be pressed together. The blank of desired width thus formed will be cut into splash shields of desired length.
