Abstract
A system for detecting water escaping from a domestic appliance comprises a tray (10) for collecting the water, a sensor (21) for detecting the presence of water in the tray (10) and control means (24) operable in response to signals received from the sensor (21) for controlling supply of power to the appliance whereby the power is switched off if the sensor (21) detects the presence of water in the tray (10). The tray (10) is provided with a removable portion (16) so that an appliance may be removed from and returned to the tray (10).
Description
A Liquid Overflow Detection System
This invention relates to a liquid overflow detection system particularly, but not exclusively, for detecting overflow of liquid from a domestic appliance, such as a washing machine.
It is common in buildings segregated into tiered apartments for the apartments each to have one or more domestic appliances for effecting washing of articles, such as clothes washing machines and dishwashers. It is also known that, from time to time, such appliances develop faults as a result of which liquid contained within the appliances overflows therefrom. Generally, liquid overflowing from a domestic appliance on an upper floor seeps through the floor to an apartment below and causes damage.
It is desirable, therefore, to provide a liquid overflow detection system.
According to the present invention, there is provided a liquid overflow detection system comprising a tray for collecting liquid overflowing from an electrically operable appliance, a sensor for detecting presence of liquid in the tray and control means operable in response to signals received from the sensor for controlling supply of power to the appliance whereby power to the appliance is switched off if the sensor detects presence of liquid in the tray.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is diagrammatic representation, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a tray 10 comprising a rectangular base 11 and walls 12,13 and 14 upstanding from three edge margins of the base 11. The wall 13 is provided in an outlet 15.
A component 16 is provided for establishing a fourth wall 17 for the tray 10, the component 16 comprising an elongate marginal strip 18 formed integrally with the wall 17 and extending at right angles thereto and end walls 19,20 extending from opposite end portions of the wall 17 at right angles thereto. In use, the component 16 is bonded to the tray 10 by means of adhesive applied to a lower surface of the strip 18 and to the end walls 19,20 so that the strip 18 bonds with the base 11 and the end walls 19,20 bond with the walls 12 and 14 upstanding from the base 11.
The tray 11 is provided with a sensor 21 and is earthed, as shown at 22.
The sensor 21 is included in an electric circuit which also includes a circuit breaker 23, a pump 24 and solenoid valves 25,26. The circuit breaker 23 is provided with pins (not shown) for engaging in a power socket of a domestic electrical power supply and includes a socket 27 for receiving pins of a plug of a washing machine (not shown).
The pump 24 is connected to a non-return valve 28 located at a junction of a discharge hose 29 of the washing machine.
An inlet of the pump 24 is connected by means of a conduit 30 to the outlet 15 on the wall 13 of the tray 10.
The solenoid valves 25,26 are similar to those used in washing machines but are provided with threaded inlets and outlets so that they screw fit between the hot and cold water supply hoses and the washing machine.
The circuit breaker 23 is arranged so that, when the sensor 21 detects the presence of liquid in the tray 10, electrical power to the washing machine is switched off, the solenoid valves 25,26 are activated to close off supply of water to the washing machine and the pump 24 is activated to drain the liquid from the tray 10. When the sensor 21 detects that the liquid has been drained from the tray 10, the pump 24 is deactivated.
It will be appreciated that the purpose of the component 16 being separate from the tray 10 is such that a washing machine can be wheeled onto the tray 10 after the tray 10 has been positioned at a suitable location, the component 16 then being bonded to the tray 10. The component 16 being removable from the tray 10 also facilitates access to the washing machine if, for example, it is necessary to replace a filter of the machine.
Claims (5)
