Abstract

232,939. Hemingway, W. April 28, 1924, [Convention date]. Systems, electric; contacts, arrangement of external.-For preventing the unauthorized use of the engine, a switch is associated with an automatic lock mechanism which comes into action at a point between the open and closed positions of the switch. In Fig. 2, which shows the switch locked in its open position, the end of the cable 7 is secured within a plug 6. Pins 10 penetrate the hardened steel casing 5 and a ring 9, which is clamped between the plug 11 and a nut 13 engaging the reduced end of the plug 11. The plug 11 and nut 13 are further locked together by a set-screw 14. Within the casing 5 are also cylindrical blocks 20, 25, 41 and spacing sleeves 19, 26, all of insulating material. Diametrally opposed pins 22, 21 in the block 20 are in connection with a binding post 28 and a disc 18 respectively, the disc being in contact with the end of the conductor 8. Within the block 41 is the lock barrel 40 retained against complete withdrawal by a pin 43<1> and in its inner position allowing a bolt 44 to engage a slot 45. This bolt may be withdrawn by a key 46. Pressed against the end of the barrel 40 is a stem of insulating material; the stem is hollow and contains a spring 34. Externally it is double-conical in shape and is surrounded by a casing 37, open on its inner periphery and containing a helical spring 38. On unlocking the barrel 40, the stem 36 moves to the left on account of the action of the enclosed spring. As soon as the widest por-. tion of the stem has passed the spring 38, the latter and its casing snap to the right against the contacts 21, 22. In the open position of the switch the contact 21 and its connected parts, e.g. the transformers, are connected to the casing by way of strips 23, 27. In pressing in the barrel 40 to lock it and open the circuit, the arrangement is such that the bolt 44 falls just before the stem 36 disengages the contacts. Sufficient slackness between the bolt 44 and the recess 45 is allowed, however, to ensure such disengagement. Above the casing 5 is a second casing enclosing an auxiliary switch acting selectively with regard to the battery and magneto, but having no intermediate contact. The moving members 52, 55, 56 are of similar design to those in the main switch, the contacts 49, 51 being connected to the battery and magneto respectively and the contacts 48, 50 to the binding post 28 of the main switch. The cable 7 is connected at its other end to the base of a transformer casing, e.g. that used in a Ford ignition arrangement.
