Abstract

A mobile telecommunication device includes a printed circuit board (14) with a through hole in it. A SIM card reading device (10) having a flat lamina-shaped body (11) and a plurality of contacts is mounted in the through hole in the printed circuit board with its contacts connected to terminal pads on the printed circuit board.

Description

SIM CARD READER FOR A MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATION DEVICE This invention relates to a SIM (subscriber identity module) card reader for use in a mobile telecommunications device such as a GSM system mobile phone.
There is currently a strong move towards making mobile phones smaller and, in particular, thinner, so that they can be carried conveniently by users. In many current designs, the SIM card reader is surface mounted on a printed circuit board and has contacts connected to printed circuit board terminal pads. The contacts make electrical connections to contacts provided on the SIM card. Such a construction thus has a thickness in the region of the SIM card amounting to the total of the thicknesses of the printed circuit board, the SIM card reader, the SIM card and any clip or other retaining device for the SIM card.
It is an object of the invention to provide a SIM card reading arrangement in which this total thickness is reduced as compared with conventional constructions.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a mobile telecommunication device having a printed circuit board, a SIM card reading device having a flat lamina-shaped body and a plurality of contacts mounted on said body, the SIM card reading device being mounted in a through hole in the printed circuit board with its contacts connected to terminal pads on the printed circuit board.
Preferably, the SIM card reading device has its contacts projecting from on surface of the body for contact with contact pads on the SIM card and connected to terminal portions for connection to the terminal pads on the printed circuit board.
The terminal portions preferably lie a common plane spaced from said one surface of the body. The terminal portions are connected to terminal pads on one side of the printed circuit board and the contacts project from the plane of the other side of the printed circuit board.
An example of a mobile telecommunication device in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a SIM card reading device; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the SIM card reader device fitted in a through hole in a printed circuit board; Figure 3 is a section through the housing of the telecommunication device showing the printed circuit board, the SIM card reading device and the SIM card in place therein; Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the housing showing a clip for retaining the SIM card, with no SIM card installed; and Figure 5 is a similar view showing the housing with the SIM card installed.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2, the SIM reading device 10 comprises a flat lamina-shaped body 11 formed with slots which house a plurality of metal contact pieces 13. Each contact piece 13 has a contact portion 13a projecting from one surface of the body 11 and a terminal portion 13b projecting from one edge of the body 11 in a plane spaced from said one surface.
The reading device 10 is mounted in a through hole in a printed circuit board 14, with the terminal portions fixed by soldering to terminal pads on one side of the board and said one surface of the body 11 substantially flush with the other side of the printed circuit board so that the contact portions 13a project from such other side of the printed circuit board.
Referring now to Figure 3, the printed circuit board 14 is mounted in the housing 15 of the mobile telecommunication device, with the SIM card reading device positioned over a through hole in a wall 15a of the housing which separates the interior of the housing from a battery compartment thereof. The SIM card 16 is located in this through hole in the wall 15a and is held in place by a clip 17 so that the pads on the SIM card contact the respective contact portions 13a of the SIM card reading device.
The clip 17 is in the form of a thin sheet metal channel of "top-hat" section. The edge flanges of this clip are received in a track formed by a recess in the side of the wall 15a adjacent the printed circuit board, so that the clip can slide longitudinally of the housing between the retracted position shown in Figure 4 and the active position shown in Figure 5 in which the clip extends across the through hole in the wall 15a.
To mount the SIM card in the device, the battery is removed to expose the wall 15a and the SIM card is placed in the through hole in the wall 15a. The clip 17 is then slid from its retracted position to its active position. A pressed dimple 17a in the clip bears on the SIM card holding it firmly in contact with the reading device 10.
