Abstract

An eye medication fine spray pump, with a flexible base for universal attachment to any open top medication vessel. The invention comprises a fine spray pump mechanism 12,13 with a tapered flexible, cap attachment 15, located to the pump base, into which the open top of any medication vessel may be secured at the wider end and, located to the spray outlet, a cup attachment 10, open at both ends and of standard eyebath shape and proportion.

Description

EYE MEDICATION DISPENSER This invention relates to a spray dispenser for administering eye medication Historically, eye medication is administered in drops from either: A pipette removable from a vessel containing medication or from a nozzle integrated to the vessel containing medication.
Drop administration, however, necessitates the awkward inclining of the head and the vertical alignment of the dispenser above the eye. Moreover, these two conditions of drop administration cannot be easily accomplished by the elderly or infirm.
The invention comprises a fine spray pump mechanism with a tapered, flexible, cap attachment, located to the pump base, into which the open top of any medication vessel may be secured at the wider end and, located to the spray outlet, a cup attachment, open at both ends and of standard eyebath shape and proportion.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows each separate component; Figure 2 shows the components assembled for use.
Referring to the drawing figure 1, the dispenser comprises a fine spray mechanism consisting of pump body 13 and spray plunger 12 with flexible cap 15, which may be releasably secured to the pump body. A tapered cup 10, open at both ends, may be releasably secured to the spray outlet 16. A hollow tube 14, open at both ends, is vertically secured at one end into the pump body, the other end becoming immersed in medication liquid when assembled for use.
In order to operate, the mechanism has to be assembled as illustrated in figure 2.
The flexible cap 15 is then secured to the open end of a vessel containing medication liquid, for example, by folding the wider end of the cap upwards onto itself and then folding down over the open end of the vessel at the position providing the tightest fit. The beveled edge 11 of the cup 10 is held comfortably against the eye socket to provide accurate directing of the spray and the forefinger and thumb are placed into the upper and lower cut-outs of the cup 10 so that the eyelids may be held apart prior to depressing the plunger 12.
In order to assist cleaning the flexible cap 15 and cup 10 may be removed from the pump body 13 and spray outlet 16 respectively by, for example, suitable screw threads on the inner circumference of the top of the cap 15 and.the lower outer circumference of the pump body 13 and on the inner circumference of the smaller end of the cup 10 and the outer circumference of the spray outlet furthest from the spray plunger 12.

Claims (3)

  1. The invention comprises a fine spray pump mechanism with a tapered, flexible, cap attachment, located to the pump base, into which the open top of any medication vessel may be secured at the wider end and, located to the spray outlet, a cup attachment, open at both ends and of standard ey.ebath shape and proportion.
  2. 2 An eye medication dispenser as claimed in claim 1 wherein either or both the cap and cup may be detachable from the pump and spray mechanism.
  3. 3 An eye medication dispenser as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the flexible cap has one or more concentric, parallel steps running horizontally along its taper thereby providing a tighter grip upon the open end of any medication vessel.
