Abstract

A food container having metallic foil sides (2) and a non-metallic preferably coated card base (14) which allows microwave transmission to heat food in the container more evenly. The liquid proof coating may be polyester which also acts as an adhesive.

Description

FOOD CONTAINER The present invention relates to foil containers for food.
Aluminium foil containers are commonly used for various food products, including, for example, frozen ready meals. In order to heat such meals it has been the practice to use microwave ovens but also ordinary electrical and gas ovens may be used. However, there may be a problem when heating food in such containers when using microwave ovens in that the microwave transmissions are inhibited by the metallic base and walls of the container. This can lead to a lack of heat generated in the food by the transmissions towards the base of the container.
A container according to the present invention therefore comprises a container for food having metallic foil sides and a substantially non-metallic base.
The provision of a mostly non-metallic base enables microwave transmissions to heat food in the container more evenly.
In a further improvement, the non-metallic base comprises card, one side of which facing the interior of the container is coated with a liquid-proof layer.
The use of card has a particular attraction since this is stiff enough to resist the downward pressure of food in the container and at the same time maintaining enough outward rigidity to prevent the container sides from collapsing inwardly. Furthermore, where the coating is of a suitable plastics material, its properties can be used to adhere the card to the foil. This is particularly important where the card has to be fixed to a rim of the metallic sides made from, for example, aluminium foil which extends around the bottom extremity of the container sides.
Preferably, a card cover is provided which extends around the walls of the container and is so constructed and arranged so that when in place on the container, sides to the cover incline inwards for an outer rim of the container to be clasped by the cover.
The coating for the card on the side facing inwardly may be polyester or a low density polyethylene. Polyester is preferred because its higher melting point makes it suitable for "double oven" use. "Double oven" means either microwave or conventional oven.
An embodiment will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a cross-section of a part of the container of Figure 1 showing the junction between the base and sides of the container.
The container shown in Figures 1 and 2 has sides 2 formed from aluminium foil. The sides extend from an upper extremity 4 where the foil is formed in a known way to provide a rigid upper rim 6. At the lower extremity 8 the foil sides 2 turn inwards to form a base rim 10 which is substantially flat. On the underside 12 of the rim 10 a card base 14 is located. The card 14 has an upper surface 16 on which is a coating layer 18. The coating layer 18 of polyester when heated forms an adhesive so that during manufacture an application of heat around the base rim 10 ensures that the card base 14 is stuck securely to the underside 12 of the base rim 10. This process ensures that there is no seepage of food products between the base and base rim.
Whilst it would be structurally stronger to locate the card base 14 on top of the base rim 10 sticking the underside of the card to the upper side of the rim, this has been deemed undesirable because of the difficulties in sealing the edge of the card. If this problem is overcome, however, this would be a desirable option, perhaps, rather than the present arrangement.
In order to enclose the upper part of the container a cover 20 is formed from coated card having sides 22 which incline inwards over the upper outer rim 6 of the container. The sides 22 are held inclined by suitable tabs 24 or whatever which are stuck or otherwise fixed around the corners 26 of the cover 20.

Claims (6)
