Abstract

A sign plate (10) has a pair of hanging apertures (14,16). A hanging element (18) has a flexible elongate member (20), eg a length of polyester cord, having a transverse bar (22) secured at each end. The dimensions are such that the bars (22) can be pushed endwise through the apertures(14,16) and then rotate to lie against the face (12) of the sign plate (1), so that the flexible member (20) provides a secure hanging loop.

Description

SIGNS The present invention relates to signs, and to a method of supporting a sign.
A known type of sign has a sign body in the form of a sign plate or board having a pair of apertures at spaced upper regions. A hanging loop is provided by passing the ends of a length of string or cord through the apertures, and tying substantial knots so that the ends cannot be withdrawn. The sign can then be suspended by the resulting loop. However, attaching the string or cord in this fashion is a rather labour-intensive operation. Furthermore if either end of a piece of string is not knotted suitably, the hanging loop is not secure.
In one aspect, the present invention provides a sign having a sign plate or board with apertures, and an elongate flexible element having at each end a transversely extending cross piece of relatively rigid material, such as it can be passed longitudinally through a hole in the sign plate and can then lie against the plate, resisting withdrawal of the flexible element.
The flexible element may be string or cord, preferably of fire-resistant material such as polyester.
The transverse element may be a metal or plastic bar, e.g. as used on treasury tags and the like.
In another type of embodiment, the flexible element and the transverse elements are integrally formed, e.g.
of nylon or other suitable plastics material.
In another aspect the invention comprises a method of hanging a sign, comprising providing a sign plate having a pair of apertures, and a flexible elongate element having a transversely extending cross piece at each end; and passing an end, or respective ends, of the flexible element through the two apertures to provide a hanging loop; and hanging the sign by means of the hanging loop.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sign assembly embodying the invention; and Figure 2 is a view on a larger scale of the hanging element of the sign assembly.
The sign assembly shown in Fig. 1 has a sign plate 10 which is a rectangular plate having a front face 12 for bearing indicia. In the top corner regions, there are a pair of apertures 14,16.
A hanging element 18 is a length of polyester cord 20 each end of which extends into an aperture in the centre of a respective plastics bar 22 which has been made fast by fusion. The transverse lengths L of the bars 22 are substantially greater than the diameters of the apertures 14,16, whereas the diameters D of the bars 22 are smaller than those of the apertures. Thus as shown for aperture 16, a bar 22 can be threaded through an aperture. The bar will then tend to turn to extend transversely to the cord 20. Thus as shown at the aperture 14, the cord 20 is thus held captive to provide a secure hanging loop.

CLAIMS:
1. A sign having a sign plate or board with apertures, and an elongate flexible element having at each end a transversely extending cross piece of relatively rigid material, such as it can be passed longitudinally through a hole in the sign plate and can then lie against the plate, resisting withdrawal of the flexible element.
2. A sign according to claim 1 wherein the flexible element is of string or cord, and each transverse element is provided by a metal or plastic bar attached to it.
3. A sign according to claim 1 wherein the flexible element and the transverse element are integrally formed.
4. A sign according to claim 3 wherein the flexible and transverse elements are integrally formed from nylon.
5. A sign substantially as herein described with reference to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
6. A method of hanging a sign, comprising providing a sign plate having a pair of apertures, and a flexible elongate element having a transversely extending cross piece at each end; and passing an end, or respective end, of the flexible element through the two apertures to provide a hanging loop; and hanging the sign by means of the hanging loop.
7. A method according to claim 6 wherein the sign is according to any of claims 2 - 5.
8. A method of hanging a sign substantially as herein described with reference to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
