Description

Multi-Purpose Blade For A Household Ii:erGrinder The present invention relates to a blade for use in a household mixer/grinder and to a mixer/grinder incorporating such a blade.
Household mixers grinders and shredders are well known. The standard structure of such mixers, grinders and shredders is that of a bowl having an aperture through which food stuffs are able to be inserted or removed and which is sealable by a lid. A rotatable spindle protrudes into the bowl through its base. The end of the spindle within the bowl is adapted to receive a blade. The blade can either be permanently attached to the spindle or detachable from the spindle to ease cleaning of the bowl and enable inter-changeability of the blade. In use, the spindle is rotatingly driven by drive means, the drive means usually being in the form of an electric motor powered either by a battery or an electrical mains supply. The types of blades which are able to be used within household mixers include blades for grinding, mixing and shredding.
In Operation, the food stuffs are inserted into the bowl through the aperture. The aperture is then sealed with the lid. This prevents any of the foodstuffs from being ejected from the bowl whilst being processed. The drive means is activated to rotatably drive the spindle. The spindle in turn rotatably drives an attached blade. The blade grinds, mixes or shreds the foodstuffs depending on the type of blade attached. The drive means is then de-activated and the lid is removed so that the processed foodstuffs can be removed.
The operation that the mixer/grinder performs on foodstuffs is dependent on the type of blade attached to the spindle. If a grinding blade is fitted, the mixer/grinder will grind the foodstuffs. If a cutting or shredding blade is fitted, the mixer/grinder will cut or shred the foodstuffs. It is desirable that the three functions of dry grinding, wet grinding and shredding are able to be carried out by a single household mixer/grinder. This is presently achieved by providing a plurality of interchangeable blades which are attachable to the spindle. This results in the problem of having to provide a number of blades which increases the overall cost of the mixer/grinder and requires additional storage space for the unused blades. Furthermore, the user has to change the blades depending on the desired function of mixer/grinder which can be time consuming and involves extra work.
It is known that there are a number of types of blades for mixer/grinders which can perform two of the three functions of dry grinding, wet grinding and shredding.
However, a mixer/grinder would still require at least two blades in order to perform all three functions. It is therefore desirable that a single blade can used in conjunction with a household mixer/grinder to perform all three functions of dry grinding, wet grinding and shredding.
It is the object of the present invention to over come the above problems by providing a single blade for use in a mixer/grinder of the variety described above which is capable of carrying out the three functions of shredding, dry grinding and wet grinding.
According to the first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a multi-purpose mixer/grinder comprising a bowl, a multi-purpose blade mountable within the bowl on a rotatable spindle and drive means capable of rotatingly driving the spindle wherein the multi-purpose blade comprises at least three blade arms which project outwards from a centre hub, the three blade arms being configured so that, as the blade is rotated, a first grinding blade arm co-operates with an inner grinding surface of the bowl to grind material located within a grinding region bounded by the path swept out by the grinding blade arm and the grinding surface of tpe bowl, a second mixing blade arm passes in close proximity to said grinding region for mixing or cutting material and moving material into said grinding region, and a third shredding blade arm is spaced from said grinding region for shredding material. The new blade is an improvement over the traditional mixer-grinder blade because it will perform the three functions of dry grinding, wet grinding and shredding. The grinding blade arm co-operates with the inner grinding surface of the bowl to grind material with the bowl as it rotates. The grinding blade arm therefore performs the function of dry grinding. The mixing blade arm mixes the material to be ground by the grinding blade arm because it is in close proximity to the grinding region and moves material into the grinding region in readiness for the grinding blade arm. This enables the grinding blade arm to also perform the function of wet grinding. The mixing blade arm also performs the function of cutting material. The shredding blade arm performs the third function of shredding. The shredding blade arm can also blend material.
Preferably, the grinding blade arm comprises a connecting portion which extends from the hub towards the grinding surface and a second portion which extends from the connecting portion at a substantially constant distance from the grinding region. Preferably, the inner grinding surface of the bowl forms a annular ring on a flat bottom surface.
Preferably, the mixing blade arm comprises a connecting portion which extends from the hub and a second portion which extends from the end of the connecting portion in close proximity to the grinding region.
Preferably, the shredding blade arm extends from the hub away from the grinding region.
j The path swept out by the shredding blade arm does not make contact with and is not in close proximity to the grinding region. This ensures that the shredding blade arm does not interfere with the grinding or mixing blade arms carrying out their functions and similarly, the grinding and mixing blade arms do not interfere with the shredding blade arm carrying out its function.
The multi-purpose blade can comprise four blade arms which are arranged to project outwards from the centre hub to form a crucifix. One way of realising such a blade is by forming the four blade arms and hub from two thin strips of rigid material attached perpendicularly to each other at their centre region, the two free ends of each strip of material forming two blade arms, the intersection of the two strips of material forming the hub. Tbis simplifies the manufacturing process for the blades. Two diametrical opposed blade arms can act as two shredding blade arms.
Similarly, two diametrically opposed blade arms can form the grinding blade arm and the mixing blade arm.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a multi-purpose blade for use in a mixer/grinder comprising at least three blade arms which project radially outwards from a centre hub, the blade arms in use are rotatingly driven about the hub, the three blade arms being configured so that, as the blade rotates1 a first grinding blade arm co-operates with the an inner grinding surface of a bowl of a mixer/grinder to grind material located within a grinding region bounded by the path swept out by the grinding blade arm and the grinding surface of a bowl of a mixer/grinder, a second mixing blade arm passes in close proximity to said grinding region for mixing or cutting material and moving material into said grinding region and a third shredding blade arm is spaced from said grinding region for shredding material.
The invention will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawing of which: Fig. 1 shows a cross sectional view of a mixer/grinder without a multipurpose blade attached; Fig. 2 shows a view of the mixer/grinder from above with the lid removed; Fig. 3 shows a cross section of a household mixer/grinder with a multi-purpose blade attached; Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the multipurpose blade; Fig. 5 shows a plan view of the mslti-puspose blade; Fig. 6 shows a cross sectional view of the multi-purpose blade along line A-A of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 shows a cross sectional view of the multi-purpose blade along line B-B of Fig. 5.
Referring to Fig. 1, the household mixer/grinder comprises a bowl 1 which is releasably attached to a base 2.
The bowl 1 has a lid 3 which is used to seal the bowl 1. The base 2 of the mixer/grinder contains an electric motor 4 which can be operated by depressing a switch 5. The electric motor 4 is able to rotatingly drive a spindle 6 mounted in the bowl 1 and which passes through the base 7 of the bowl 1 into the base 2 of the mixer/grinder. The spindle 6 comprises a support surface 8 and an end portion 9 which has a rectangular cross-section. See Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the mixer/grinder wiyh a multi-purpose mixer-grindt blade 10 mounted on the end portion 9 of the spindle 6 and supported by the support surface 8. Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the multi-purpose blade 10 and Fig. 5 shows a plan view of the multi-purpose blade 10. The spindle 6 rotatably drives the multi-purpose blade 10 via a hub 11 of the multi-purpose blade 10 which has a corresponding rectangular hole 12 which keys into by the end portion 9 of the spindle 6.
In use, food stuffs to be mixed, shredded or ground up are placed in the bowl 1. The lid 3 is then placed on the bowl 1 and the switch 5 is depressed to activate the motor 4. The motor 4 rotatingly drives the spindle 6 which in turn rotatingly drives the multi-purpose blade 10 about the hub 11. As the multi-purpose blade 10 rotates, it mixes, shreds or grinds any food stuffs within the bowl. The motor 4 is then stopped. The mixed, shredded or ground material is then removed by removing the lid 3 and extracting the material from the bowl 1.
The blade 10 has two sets of diametrically opposed blade arms 13, 14, 15, 16 which are arranged perpendicularly to each to form a cruciform as shown in the plan view of Fig. 5. The first set of diametrically opposed blade arms 13, 14 are turned downwards as best seen in the cross sectional view along line A-A of Fig. 5 shown in Fig. 6. A first blade arm 13 forms a grinding blade and has a first connecting portion 17 which slopes downwards and outwards from the hub 11 of the blade 10 at an angle of 300 to the axis of rotation 19 of the blade 10 and a second portion 18 which extends horizontally outwards from the end of the connecting portion perpendicularly to the axis of rotation 19 of the multi-purpose blade 10. The grinding blade arm 13 is arranged so that when the multi-purpose blade 10 is fixed to the spindle 6 of tpe mixer/grinder, the second portion 18 lies close to and substantially parallel with the horizontal base 7 of the bowl 16 (as shown in Figure 3). As the grinding blade arm 13 rotates1 it grinds any food stuffs within the bowl 1 in a region bounded by the path swept out by the second portion 18 of the grinding blade arm 13 and the flat inner surface of the base 7 of the bowl 1, hereafter referred to as the grinding region. The grinding blade arm 13 on its own performs dry grinding. The second blade arm 14 is a mixing blade having a connecting portion 20 which extends horizontally outwards from the hub 11 of the multi-purpose blade 10 perpendicular to the axis of rotation 19.-of the multi-purpose blade 10 and a second portion 21 which slopes downward and radially outwards from the end of the connecting portion 20 at an angle of 750 to the axis of rotation 19 immediately above and thereby in close proximity to the grinding region. As the multi-purpose blade 10 rotates, the mixing blade arm 14 mixes any foodstuffs and moves. the foodstuffs into the grinding region in readiness for the grinding blade arm 13 to grind the foodstuffs. This enables the grinding blade arm 13 to also perform wet grinding. In addition to mixing any foodstuffs, the mixing blade arm 14 also cuts foodstuffs The two upwardly turned blade arms 15, 16 are shown more clearly in Figure 7 which is a cross-sectional view along line B-B of Figure 5. These blade arms 15, 16 form shredding blades, each having a flat portion 22, 23 which slope upward and outward from the hub of the multi-purpose blade 10 at an angle of 430 to the axis of rotation 19 of the multi-purpose blade 10. When the multi-purpose blade 10 rotates, the shredding blade arms 15, 16 shred the food stuffs. In addition to shredding foodstuffs, the shredding blade arms 15, 16 blend foodstuffs. The four blade arms 13, 14, 15, 16 are arranged so that the paths swept out by the shredding blade arms iS, 16 are located away from the grinding region so that they do not interfere with the grinding region.
As best shown in Figure 4, the grinding blade arm 13 and mixing blade arm 14 are formed from a single thin strip of stainless steel. Similarly, the two shredding blade arms 15, 16 are also formed from a single strip stainless steel.
The two strips are then arranged a 900 to each and attached at their centre point other to form the cruciform. The hub 11 of the multi-purpose blade 10 is formed at the intersection of the two strips of metal.
