Abstract
A modulator for modulating input collimated light, in particular UV, uses a spatial filtering arrangement to direct the input light onto phosphor emitters. To this end it comprises at least one switchable beam-deflecting device, such as a scattering LCD (1), at least one lens (3) and at least one secondary output means such as a phosphor screen (9, 11) which emits visible light when input light is directed towards it through the lens. The beam-deflecting device (1) is arranged so that, in its scattering state, it substantially prevents the input light from reaching the secondary output means, hence producing a dark output, while in its other (clear) state the UV light passes through the pinhole (5) and reaches the phosphor (11).
