Abstract
232,766. Thirtle, T. H., and Smyth & Sons, Ltd., J., (Oakes, G. C.). April 10, 1924. Seed drills. - A seed drill comprises a rectangular main frame mounted on two rear carriage wheels and a front steerable wheel, trailing frames pivoted to the main frame and carrying furrowing and seed covering devices, and spoon-wheel mechanism for feeding seeds singly to the furrows. The carriage wheels 2 are mounted on side bars 3, and the front wheel 4 on a standard 5 carrying a steering handle 8 extending rearwardly to the driver's seat. The wheel 4 may be replaced by two wheels near together and mounted so that their axle may turn about a horizontal axis as well as a vertical axis. The trailing frames 12 are U-shaped in plan and are braced by wooden blocks. They are adjustably pivoted on brackets 11 on a cross-bar 10 and their downward movement is limited bv hooks on rods 28. These rods may also be provided with hooks 30 to support the frames in raised positions for travelling purposes. Two conical wheels 14 are mounted on each frame 12 to cover the seeds and press the furrowing-devices into the ground. These latter each consist of two unequal discs 16, Fig. 10, inclined to one another and mounted so that they touch each other and the conical or flat ends of their hubs roll upon one another. Their inclined axles 20 are secured by collars and nuts and are each bored to form a passage from a grease cap 26 to the hub 24. The seeds are delivered between the discs 16 by pivoted and telescoping straight tubes 27. The seed box 1 is divided into hopper-like compartments fitted with adjustable slides to regulate the quantity delivered to spoon-wheels which deliver the seeds singly through adjustable funnels to the tubes 27. The spoon-wheels are mounted on shafts connected by fiexible couplings and driven from one of the wheels 2 by variable chain gearing and a clutch. The circular spoons 44, Fig. 9, are interchangeable and are carried by arms 43 projecting laterally from disc wheels. They have flat bottoms with sides inclined at 135‹ to them. The arms 43 may be riveted in square holes in the discs and arranged so that the tops of the spoons are in radial planes. A pivoted track marker is provided at each end of the front cross-bar 6. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the frames 12 carry claw-like blades 48<*> instead of wheels or in addition to them. They are braced by bent cross members supporting the lower ends of the tubes 27, and are pressed down by springs surrounding rods 50 pivotally connected to cranks 51 which are adjustable simultaneously by means of a screwed handle 54 and swivelling nut 53. Specification 4944/91 is referred to.
