Abstract

Dyestuffs of the probable general formula <FORM:0232740/2/1> in which R is alkyl or aryl. R1 is vinylene, phenylene, or naphthylene, Y is = CR1R2, or -S-, or -O-, and X is Cl, Br, I, SO4H, ClO4, NO3, or the like, are prepared by condensing an orthoformic ester, or a salt of formic acid, or b -alkyloxy-acroleinacetal, with a cyclammonium salt containing a reactive methyl group in the a -position to the nitrogen. Such cyclammonium salts are the a -methylindolenium salts the m -methylbenzoxazolium salts, and the m -methylbenzthiazolium salts. According to examples a b b -trimethylindolenium methyl iodide is condensed with orthoformic ethylester or with sodium formate to yield a red dyestuff; the corresponding dyestuffs of the naphthalene series are blue; the methyliodide of m -methylbenzthiazole yields a violet dyestuff and the corresponding oxazole derivative a yellow dyestuff. The products, excepting those derived from quinaldines, are stated to be new. a b b -Trimethylindolenium compounds of the naphthalene series are produced by condensing 1- or 2-naphthylhydrazine with a ketone, for example acetone. melting with zinc chloride and alkylating the indol obtained whereby three alkyl groups are introduced.
