Abstract
An embossing plate 26 is driven by the vertically-reciprocated shaft 29 of a paper printing machine by means of a support assembly 10 that includes a stationary mounting member 11 through which an upper rod 15 slidably passes, and a second mounting member 17 located on the shaft 29 through which a lower rod 22 passes. The rods 15,22 are connected together, with the lower end of the rod 22 being provided with the embossing plate 26. The position of the mounting member 17 on the rod 22 is determined by thumb wheels 27,28.
Description
A Support Assembly
Technical Field
The present invention relates to machines employed in the printing industry which machines operate as numbering machines or are adapted to perforate, crease, die cut or slit sheet material passing thorough the machine. The present invention also relates to machines which emboss.
Background of the Invention
Machines which are currently available and print numbers on sheet material and/or perforate, crease, die cut or slit are not adapted to emboss material passing through the machines. Generally, these machines include a central area through which the material to be printed or perforated passes. The area is boarded on its sides by two vertically extending housing portions. Extending between the housing portions is a vertically reciprocated shaft to which is attached the numbering head, perforating or slitting equipment. Above this vertically driven shaft is a rotatably driven shaft which transfers motion between the two housing portions so that both ends of the vertically reciprocated shaft are driven in unison.
An example of the above discussed machine is produced by Rollem of
Sheffield, UK.
The above discussed machine suffers from the disadvantages that it is unable to emboss material, or provide stability and accuracy reliably
Object of the Invention
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
Summary of the Invention
There is disclosed herein a support assembly to be mounted in a machine which receives sheet material and carries out an operation thereon, the machine including a generally horizontally extending shaft which is vertically reciprocated, said assembly comprising:
a first mounting member to be attached to the machine so as to be maintained generally stationary relative to the machine;
a second mounting member to be mounted on the shaft so as to move therewith; comection means extending between the first and second mountings and accommodating relative movement therebetween as a result of the reciprocation of said shaft; and attachment means to attach an implement to said second mounting to engage the sheet material passing through the machine, as a result of reciprocation of said first shaft.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which schematically depicts in side elevation a mounting assembly.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
In the accompanying drawing there is schematically depicted a support assembly 10 to be included in a Rollem machine. The assembly 10 includes a first mounting member 11 having a passage 12 through which the rotatably driven shaft of the Rollem machine would pass. Typically, the mounting member 11 would include bearing material around the passage 12 so that the mounting member 11 permits rotation of the shaft relative thereto. The mounting member 11, as an alternative, can be attached to another part of the machine. The member 11 needs to be maintained generally stationary relative to the machine.
The mounting member 11 is also provided with a further passage 13 at least partly defined by bushes 14. Slidably mounted in the bushes 14 is a rod 15 which has at its lower end a threaded portion so as to provide socket 16.
The assembly 10 further includes a second mounting member 17 which in this embodiment consists of two half portions 18 and 19, the portions 18 and 19 having two passage portions which combine to provide an aperture 29. The vertically reciprocated shaft of the Rollem machine extends through the aperture 29. The half portions 18 and 19 cooperate in providing a passage 20. A threaded fastener 21 secures the two half portions 18 and 19 together.
Extending through the passage 20 is a rod 22 having threaded upper 23 and lower 24 ends. The upper end 23 is threadably engaged with the threaded socket 16, while the lower end 24 threadably engages the mounting portion 25 of a heated base plate 26.
In this embodiment the plate 26 is an embossing member which would cooperate with an anvil.
Two pairs of thumb wheels 27 and 28 threadably engage the rod 22 and lock the mounting member 17 in position on the rod 22. The thumb wheels" 27 and 28 enable the rod 22 to be adjusted along its longitudinal axis relative to the mounting member 17 to thereby adjust the position of the plate 26.
In operation of the above discussed assembly 10, the plate 26 may be employed to emboss, number, hot foil, etc, paper or other sheet material as it passes through the Rollem machine. The upper rotational shaft supports the mounting member 11 by being rotatably received in the passage 12. The lower vertically reciprocated shaft passing through the aperture 29, causes vertical oscillation of the mounting member 17 and therefore the plate 26. The rod 15 is allowed to slide through the bushes 14 to accommodate the vertical relative movement between the mounting members 11 and 17.
In the above described embodiment, the mounting 11 may also consist of a two part construction similar to the construction of the mounting 17.
Preferably, the assembly 10 is adapted to prevent rotation of the rod 22 about its longitudinal axis when "thumb wheels" 27 and 28 are loose. For example, a clamp could be placed on the stem 30 of the plate 26, with the clamp having a vertical rod received within a recess in the mounting 17.
