Abstract
A device to indicate the relative position of a rotated wheel with incremental indication of number of completed rotations and the direction of same. The device is self contained requiring no other influence except for gravity and to be afixed to the controlling wheel. The operation is by way of displaced material carried in a archimedian type scroll or spiral where gravity is the displacing force combined with the rotation of the controlling wheel.
Description
This invention concerns a rotational position indicator
There are many applications for a Rotational Positional Indicator refered to here after in short as RPL Where ever a wheel or rotary device is used to control or steer a system or device it is most times useful to have knowledge of the amount of rotation/rotations.
There are many scalar devices that can be fitted or intrinsic to the build of rotary devices, however retro-6it can be difficult and sometimes impractical. For example the rudder position of a boat when steered remotely by way of a wheeled system The invention concerned here is a RPI that works by way of material displacement around a labiynth system, the material will be displaced by gravitational pulp on the material medium including the application of the achrrnedes screw principle to achieve the desired effect, the material is contained within the labrinth which can be formed by way of two concentric spirals of translucent tube one of which may Bor clariy. There must be on the simplest form of this device an angular displacement of the spirals from level at a minimum of A5 degrees.
A horizontal version can be fabricated with the extra facility of fixed permanent magnets closely arranged about the labrynth and the use of magnetic material medium/s.
A version can be made using a mechanical threadform with a free running nut that supports a bias weight and by way of linear displacement can be made to operate a indicator flaP.
For low number rotations and parallel tube configuration it would only be neccessary to haveN+1 turns of the spirals for N rotations. The background of a translucent tube could be graduated for additional accuracy or in the case of marine use coloured red and green (port and starboard).
In the case of higher numben of rotation the feeding spiral(direction dependent) could be manufactured with a detent escapement, gate device to allow only a unit of material to pass upon one and each complete rotation.A retaining detent can be included in the case of once only use devices.
A pennanent indicator chemical can be incitided for security and once only use devices.
The material medium could be liquid, powder, or formed shapes, e.g shot ball or ball bearmv and colored or numbered accordhiy. If liquid, multicoloured imsscible types could be used in a single or multiple labrynth arrangement.
Zeroing of the device can be accomplished by removal and refitting as appropriate in the correct phase or byway of a detent release system so that independant rotation can be had to achieve correct phase of operation.
