Abstract

A trap, eg a horse drawn cart, has a front cross frame 5 and a rear cross frame 4 which may be pivoted to reduce the distance between the wheeled side frames 6, thus facilitating storage or transportation. The trap frame is secured in the open position, as figure 1, by means of the seat frame 1 and the floor section 3. Driving shafts 2 are provided at the front of the trap which may be removed to reduce the overall length. After removal of the seat and floor section the trap may be collapsed to the closed state, as figure 4, by pivoting the cross frames in the direction of arrow 9 in figure 3.

Description

FOLDING TRAP This invention relates to a folding two wheeled horse drawn vehicle.
A trap, also known widely as a cart or gig, is a horse drawn vehicle comprising of two wheels, onto which a ridged framed body and seat are mounted, with a pair of shafts fixed to the front, within which the horse or pony is driven.
Traps are not easy to store or transport, particularly if you wish to transport the horse or pony simultaneously via the same mode.
According to the present invention there is provided a folding trap with removable shafts, seat and floor section. The body consists of two ridged side frames, each mounted on its own wheel.
These frames are then joined together by a folding mechanism front and rear. The seat frame and floor section, are used to lock the whole structure into a ridged position, with seat and floor removed, the complete frame of the body can be pivoted backwards and inwards, while both side frames and wheels remain parallel to each other. Thus resulting in a flat pack form, whilst still mobile on its own wheels, thus enabling the whole structure to be easily wheeled into one side of a horse trailer or, through a standard doorway into a secure building. In addition, removal of the shafts would enable the complete structure to be transported by an estate car.
A specific embodiment ofthe invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : Figure 1 shows in perspective, the trap with the seat, floor and shafts in position on the body framework.
Figure 2 shows the trap with the seat, floor and shafts removed, revealing the entire body framework.
Figure 3 illustrates the trap part way through the closure cycle.
Figure 4 shows the trap in the fully closed position.
Referring to the drawings the trap comprises of two wheeled side frames 6 secured together by a pivoting front frame 5 and a pivoting rear frame 4 (details of pivoting mechanism not shown).
At the rear ofthe trap there are two brackets 8 for attaching the seat 1 and at the front of the trap provision has been made for attaching the driving shafts 2.
In order to fold the trap the seat and floor 3 are removed as shown in figure 2. The trap may now be folded by walking the right hand side frame in the direction of arrow 9 shown in figure 3. The front and rear frames rotate maintaining the side frames parallel. The pivot points of the front frame are identified by arrow 7, the rear frame has similar pivot points. Once the pivoting motion is complete the trap is in the closed state. The resultant, narrower, structure is still very stable and may be freely wheeled around.
To restore the trap to the open state (i.e as figure 1) the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.

Claims (6)

1 A folding trap comprising two wheeled side frames, front and rear cross frames, removable seat, floor and driving shafts, means for reasonably securing the side frames to the cross frames, the side and cross frames being adapted to permit the collapse of the trap.
2 A folding trap as claimed in Claim 1, wherein pivoted means are provided on the side frames co-operable with the cross frames to control the pivoting movement of the structure.
3 A folding trap as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein guided means are provided on the side frames co-operable with the seat frame to control the attachment of the seat.
4 A folding trap as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein guided means are provided on the side frames co-operable with the floor to control the attachment of the floor.
5 A folding trap as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the side frames are provided with at least two pivoting cross frames.
6 A folding trap substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 14 of the accompanying drawing.
