Description
TWO OR THREE PACK SYSTEM FOR THE PREPARATION OF PERACID
COMPOSITIONS FOR MEDICAL DISINFECTION
This invention concerns a two or three pack system for preparing such compositions and uses of such compositions.
More particular the present invention concerns compositions comprising dilute aqueous solutions of lower aliphatic peracids and their use as disinfection compositions.
This invention relates specifically to solutions of peracetic acid as disclosed in EP-A0357238(Steris Corp.) and PCT No. PCT/GB92/01830(Solvay Interox Ltd.),US Patent No.
5545343(Solvay Interox Ltd.) combining solutions of peracetic acid with components that are likely to cause destabilisation or incompatible over prolonged periods(greater than 14 days). The two or three pack system allows the compositions that are considered destabilising or incompatible to be segregated prior to mixing at the time of use.
In addition to segregating the various components on the grounds that the overall shelf-life expectancy of the respective products will be extended it also takes into account the impact peracetic acid has on the packaging material. It is known that peracetic acid in contact with high density polymers such as high density polyethylene or polypropylene causes embrittlement and subsequent pack failure. The effect on low density polymers such as low density polyethylene is significantly lower and the invention therefore incorporates the use of both high density polymers such as polyethylene or polypropylene for strength of the main pack(l -25 litres) and low density polymers such as polyethylene for the smaller peracetic acid pack(0.05-2.5 litres)
In addition within the disclosure PCT No. PCT/GB92101830 there are claims 14, and 29 to the use of indicators which are themselves adversely affected in contact with either the first or second aqueous solution. This invention allows for the indicator to be held separately until the time of use within the three pack system.
Claim: 1. A pack comprising two or three compartments for the preparation of an aqueous disinfectant
composition comprising mixing a first aqueous solution comprising a lower aliphatic peracid
with a second aqueous solution comprising components expected to destabilise or exhibit
incompatibility on long-term storage( > l4 days).
2. A pack as claimed in 1., wherein the first aqueous solution comprises a (C2 - C9) aliphatic peracid in an amount from 1% to 7% by weight and is contained in a low density polymer such
as a low density polyethylene pack 3. A pack as claimed in 1, wherein the first aqueous solution comprises a (C2 -C9) aliphatic peracid in an amount of from 2% - 6% by weight and is contained in a low density polymer such as a low density polyethylene pack 4. A pack as claimed in 2 or 3, wherein the aliphatic peracid comprises peracetic acid and is contained in a low density polymer such as a low density polyethylene pack.
5. A pack as claimed in 1,2,or 3 wherein the second aqueous solution comprises 0.1% to 5% by weight of a second aqueous solution of a phosphate, triazoles or molybdates contained in a high density polymer such as a high density polyethylene pack
6. A pack as claimed in claim 1 wherein the second aqueous solution comprises from 0.1% to
2% by weight of a second aqueous solution of said at least one hydrogen peroxide stabiliser
contained in a high density polymer such as a high density polyethylene pack.
7. A pack as claimed in claim 6 wherein the second aqueous solution comprises 0.2 % to 1% by
weight of the second aqueous solution of said at least one hydrogen peroxide stabiliser.
8. A pack as claimed in 1,2,3,6, or 7 wherein the low density polyethylene pack (1) with vented
cap and the high density polyethylene pack (2) are joined together to form a third compartment
holding an indicator which undergoes a colour change when the solutions are mixed together.
9. Apack as claimed in 1,2,3,6,7 or 8 wherein the components are mixed by means of a two way
hard plastic/metal bursting disc that punctures the low density polyethylene pack (1) with
vented cap and the high density polyethylene pack (2) to allow mixing of the two products 10. A pack as claimed in 2,3,6,7,8 or 9 that uses a threaded shive(plug) to seal the high density polyethylene pack (2) and form a compartment for the indicator and bursting disc.
11. A pack as claimed in 1,2,3,6,7,8,9 or 10 that uses a tamper evident removable collar that ensures accidental or premature bursting of either the low density polyethylene or high density polyethylene pack is avoided up until the time of use.
Claims (11)
