Abstract

A holder for holding a coreless roll of sheet material comprises a non-rotating spindle 2, provided with a radially projecting member 10, which biases a portion of the interior surface of the roll 4 into contact with the holder. The said member is preferably attached to the spindle via a clip 12. The clip is preferably part - circular in cross-section, having flanges at each of its opposed edges (14 and 16 figure 6). Thus, when a roll 4 of sheet material is fitted to the holder, the radially projecting member 10 will act as a brake to prevent the roll 4 from free - wheeling when the sheet material is dispensed.

Description

Holder The present invention relates to a holder for holding a coreless roll of sheet material.
To dispense a portion of sheet material from a coreless roll, for example a roll of toilet paper or a roll of paper kitchen towels, the roll is typically mounted either horizontally or vertically upon a spindle about which it rotates as the sheet material is drawn off.
However, a limitation of such an arrangement is that, where a person pulls too hard upon the free end of the rolled sheet material, sufficient angular momentum may be imparted to the roll to cause it to continue rotating once pulling has ceased. Thus, an excessive amount of sheet material may be dispensed.
Elaborate inertial devices are known for limiting the rate at which sheet material is dispensed from a holder, however such devices are typically expensive and difficult to manufacture.
I have now devised a simple arrangement which overcomes the above-mentioned limitations of existing holders.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a holder for holding a core less roll of sheet material, said holder comprising a non-rotating spindle provided with a radially projecting member for biasing a portion of the interior surface of the roll into contact with the holder.
Thus, when a roll is fitted to the holder, the radially projecting member will act as a brake to prevent the roll from free-wheeling when the sheet material is dispensed. It will be appreciated that the braking force exerted by the radially projecting member upon the roll is less than the force required to detach a piece of sheet material therefrom, typically by tearing the sheet material along a transverse, perforated line.
Preferably the projecting member comprises an elongate resilient element which extends longitudinally of the spindle, and preferably along substantially the entire length of the spindle.
Preferably the radially projecting member comprises a bowed portion which is preferably arranged so that, in use, the most radially extreme portion of the projecting member is situated substantially half way between the opposite ends of the spindle.
Preferably one end only of the radially projecting member is attached to the spindle. Preferably, the projecting member is arranged so that, in use, its free-end is biased into contact with the spindle.
Preferably the radially projecting member is attached to the spindle by means of a clip, which is preferably an integral portion of the projecting member. Preferably the clip is of part-circular cross-section which preferably comprises a flange at each of its opposed edges to assist in fitting the clip to the spindle.
It will be appreciated that, where the radially projecting member is attached to the spindle by a part-circular clip, then the projecting member may act to bias the interior of the roll into contact with a portion of the clip, e.g. the above-mentioned flanges of the clip.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of examples only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective, cut-away view of a holder in accordance with the present invention; Figures 2 and 3 are, respectively, cross-sectional side and front views of the holder of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the biasing member of the holder of Figure 1; Figure 5 and 6 are, respectively, end and side views of the biasing member; and, Figure 7 is a cross-sectional side view of an alternative holder arrangement.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, a holder is shown comprising a horizontally oriented, non-rotating spindle 2 about which a coreless roll 4 of sheet material is arranged, and is prevented from sliding along the spindle by end members 6 and 8.
The spindle 2 comprises a biasing member 10 (Figures 4 to 6), which is attached to the spindle by a clip 12. The clip 12 is of part-circular cross-section, and has a flange 14,16 formed at each of its opposed edges so that the clip may be readily fastened to and removed from the spindle.
The biasing member 10 further comprises an elongate element 18 which extends longitudinally from the clip 12, along substantially the entire length of the spindle 2. The elongate element 18 projects outwards from the axis of the clip at its proximal end and is bowed part way along its length so that the distal portion 20 normally extends substantially parallel to the axis of the clip 12, and at a distance from that axis greater than half of the internal diameter of the core less roll 4 into which it is to be fitted.
The member 10 is formed of a resilient material so that when the coreless roll 4 is fitted to the holder, as shown in Figures 1 to 3, the elongate element 18 is compressed so that it flexes towards the spindle 2. A force is thus exerted axially upon the roll 4 which biases the interior surface of the roll into contact with the projecting flanges 14,16.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the elongate element 18 is sufficiently long so that, when the roll 4 is fitted to the holder, the distal end of the elongate element is biased into contact with the surface of the spindle 2, thus distributing the compressional force more evenly along the length of the spindle.
In the alternative embodiment of Figure 7, the spindle 2 is shown mounted vertically upon a base 22.
The holder thus described provide simple yet effective means for holding a coreless roll which prevents an excessive quantity of sheet material from being dispensed due to freewheeling of the roll.
