Abstract
An adjustable cavity closure means includes a cavity closer (1) having locking formations (8,9) on the exterior thereof adapted to be clipped onto or into corresponding locking formations (6, 7) on or in a surround strip (2) for receiving a window, door or other such fitting in the opening. The closure means also comprises a detachable web (5), and an attachable L-shaped bracket (13) which can be removed or implemented, respectively, to accommodate different cavity sizes.
Description
"Cavity Closure Means"
This invention relates to cavity closures for windows and doors which are to be fitted into an opening in a cavity wall.
In U.K. Patent Application No. GB 2277755A there is shown a cavity closure of generally rectangular box-section for fitting into two differing cavity widths according to the orientation in which the box-section is located in the cavity such that it may be used in a relatively narrow cavity, for example of 50 mm width, or upon rotation through 90" about its longitudinal axis, may be used to fill a larger cavity, such as one of 75 mm.
Projections and recesses for attaching the cavity closure to items such as plaster trims, wall fixing lugs and window acceptors are provided on each of the four external faces of the cavity closure.
The present invention is derived from the realisation that cavity closures necessarily have to be adaptable in order to cope with varying widths of cavity and it would also be desirable to include as much insulation filling material as possible, whilst at the same time allowing for flexibility in positioning of windows, patio doors etc.
within the opening.
According to the invention there is provided adjustable cavity closure means including a cavity closer having locking formations on the exterior thereof adapted to be clipped onto or into corresponding locking formations on or in a surround strip for receiving a window, door or other such fitting in the opening. Preferably, the surround strip is provided with a number of locking formations at predetermined positions, complementary pairs of which cooperate with corresponding formations on the cavity closer to thereby form a flanged structure into the inner portion of which relative to the wall opening may be fitted a window, door or the like.
Preferably, the cavity closer includes a detachable web by which the closer may be fitted within a relatively wide cavity but by detachment thereof from the closer, the closer may be fitted within a relatively narrow cavity of the type described above.
Conveniently, the detachable web may be formed so as to retain insulating material thereagainst between the cavity closer and the inner wall surface.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a cavity wall and cavity closer disposed centrally with respect to a surround or edging strip,
Figure 2 is a view corresponding to that of Figure 1 but in which the surround strip or edging strip is positioned to one side of the cavity closer, and
Figure 3 is a view of the cavity closer of Figure 1 installed within a narrower cavity and the surround strip or edging strip in a still further position to those shown in
Figures 1 and 2.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, adjustable cavity closure means in accordance with this embodiment of the invention comprises a generally box-section cavity closer 1 and a generally flat elongate surround strip or edging strip 2 including at one end thereof an upright stop member 3 for preventing a window 4 (only part of which is shown) or door (not shown) from falling. The stop member 3 has mounted thereon a plastics cap or cover 3a of plastics material which may conveniently be coloured to match the window or door system to be fitted in the wall opening. The cavity closer 1 includes a detachable web 5 by which it may be optionally fitted within a relatively wide cavity as shown in
Figures 1 and 2 or, if removed, fitted into a relatively narrow cavity as shown in Figure 3.
The underside of the surround or edging strip 2 is provided with a series of inwardly facing locking. formations 6, 7, respective pairs of which engage with correspondingly shaped projections 8 and 9 on opposite sides of the cavity closer 1.
A rear stop member 10 includes a locking formation 11 which is inserted within a correspondingly shaped channel 12 in the surround strip 2 such that between the stop member 3 and stop member 10 a window or door may be sandwiched for fixing and thereby filling the opening in the wall. The stop member is itself of generally channel section so that it can receive plasterboard in the manner shown.
As will be seen from Figure 2, the position of the surround or edge strip 2 relative to the cavity closer 1 can be adjusted by the simple expedient of either being unclipped or prised apart and repositioned as desired, in this instance with the closer 1 located in a central or mid position relative to the strip 2.
In Figure 3 there is shown a situation wherein the webbed portion 4 has been removed so that the cavity closer 1 may fit within a narrower cavity in the wall and, in the position as shown, the position of the strip 2 relative to the closer I is again changed to its most extreme so that the stop member 3 lies flush with the left hand edge of the cavity closer 1. Alternatively, where the cavity is relatively wide, as in Figures 1 and 2, the webbed portion 5 may be replaced by an "L" or similarly shaped locking element 13 ( shown in outline in Figure 1) with its own locking formations 14, 15 such that the right hand side of the strip 2 may be secured thereto and the chamber defined by the inner walls of the element 13 and respective walls of the cavity closer 1 and strip 2 is sealed from the wall. Conveniently, this chamber may contain insulating material.
The invention therefore provides adjustable cavity closure means by which the position of the surround strip 2 relative to the closer 1 can be adjusted to suit varying requirements and, equally, the width of the closer 1 can be adjusted by removal of the detachable web 5 where the closer 1 has to be fitted within a relatively narrow cavity between two walls.
Claims (5)
1. Adjustable cavity closure means including a cavity closer having locking formations on the exterior thereof adapted to be clipped onto or into corresponding locking formations on or in a surround strip for receiving a window, door or other such fitting in the opening.
2. Cavity closure means according to Claim 1 in which the surround strip is provided with a number of locking formations at predetermined positions co-operable with corresponding formations on or in the cavity closer to thereby form a flanged structure into the inner portion of which relative to the wall opening may be fitted a window, door or the like.
3. Cavity closure means according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 further including a detachable web on the cavity closer by which the closer may be fitted within a relatively wide cavity but by detachment thereof from the closer, the closer may be fitted within a relatively narrow cavity.
4. Cavity closure means according to Claim 3 wherein the detachable web is formed so as to retain insulating material thereagainst between the cavity closer and the inner wall surface of a cavity.
5. Cavity closure means substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Figures 1 to 3.
