Abstract

A self adjusting stabilizer is intended to give a touring caravan a high degree of parked stability and at the same time requiring no setting up during normal use. The inherent rear end sideways instability of most touring caravans shown at 7 can almost be totally eliminated by a stabilizer taking the sideways forces and anchoring them to the ground. The stabilizer has the ability to be very effectively anchored by using the weight of the caravans existing jack, to clamp self adjusting shoe 4 of the stabilizer to the ground. The side movement forces from the caravan chassis are transmitted to the shoe by the double acting connecting rod 2. The double acting connecting rod is fixed at 9 to the chassis by a ball swivel joint, and to the shoe by swivel joint 3, this then takes the side forces shown as 7, and exerts this force shown as 8, into the anchored shoe.

Description

SELF ADJUSTING DOUBLE ACTING STABILIZER FOR TOURING CARAVANS This invention relates to a selfadjusting double acting stabilizer for touring caravans.
Touring caravans have been in existance for some years now and the general chassis constuction has varied very little over this time. Most of the manufacturers seem to keep to the same basic principles, this comprises of 1 or 2 centre mounted axles with a stabilizer jack in each corner.
Touring caravans, however, when parked with the jacks deployed, suffer from a small amount of rear sideways movement when there is a side wind or persons moving around.
This movement is mainly caused by the roll in pneumatic road tyres and flexing in the design of the 2 rear jacks.
According to the present invention there is provided a straight double acting or, push pull tubular rod connected by a ball swivel joint to the chassis, the other end of which is connected via a swivel joint to the self adjusting shoe attached to the existing corner jack.
The self adjusting shoe which runs under the existing jack has a long retaining bolt the length of the shoe which moves through the foot of the existing jack. The length of the shoe has been designed to compensate for the varying angle of the rod as the existing jack is wound up or down.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows the invention.
Figure 2 shows the rear view of a typical touring caravan with its jacks extended.
Figure 3 shows the invention fitted and in the deployed position.
Figure 4 shows the invention fitted and in its retracted or travelling position.
Referring to the drawings the stabilizer in fig 1. comprises of a double acting or push pull tubular rod 2 attached to a self adjusting shoe 4.
Referring to fig 2 which shows the rear view of a typical touring caravan with its jacks 6 deployed in the parked position. In fig 3. with reference to 7 which shows the side movement forces inherent in the typical touring caravan with the existing jacks deployed.
With the stabilizer fitted the side movement forces are transmitted to 8 via the ball joint fixed to the chassis at 9 through rod 2 and into the shoe 4.
The right hand jack when fully deployed forces the stabilizer shoe 4 into the ground, the double acting rod 2 transmits all side movement energy forces away into the ground.
Fig 4. shows the retracted jack with the stabilizer shoe 4 which automatically moved over to the right as the jack was wound up, this is to take up the varying angle length of rod 2.

Claims (3)

1 A self adjusting double acting stabilizer for touring caravans comprising of a double acting or push pull tubular connecting rod connected to the chassis by a ball swivel joint, the other end of the rod is connected via a swivel joint to a self adjusting shoe which attaches to the existing jack.
2 A self adjusting double acting stabilizer as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the shoe is fully automatic in that it adjusts to varying jack heights without any manual adjustment.
3 A self adjusting double acting stabilizer as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the shoe via the double acting rod transmits nearly all side movement energy forces away into the ground.
