Abstract

A fibre optic cable comprising an outer sheath 11 encasing a plurality of inner tubes 12,13,14, each inner tube encasing a plurality of individual optical fibres 16. The inner tubes are preferably manufactured from material having a coefficient of friction of 0À12 or lower and resistance to moisture penetration. The outer sheath preferably also contains an aramid yarn 20 to increase tensile strength. Preferably the inner tube is unfilled and made of polypropylene. The outer sheath is preferably made of low smoke zero halogen material. The cable is preferably non-metallic. The inner tubes or optic fibres may be colour coded.

Description

The present invention relates to Fibre Optic cables One of the preferred aims is to provide a multi - fibre cable suitable for both internal wiring and external duct applications, which is much more convenient to use than presently available multi fibre cable One aspect of the invention provides a Fibre Optic cable comprising of an outer sheathing encasing a plurality of inner tubes, each inner tube encasing a plurality of individual Optical Fibre. In addition the inner tubes are manufactured from material of low coefficient of friction which allows the the Optical Fibres to move freely within the tubes witbout snagging and without any additional lubricant. It is preferable that tbis material has a coefficient of friction of 0.12 or lower and also has a good resistance to moisture penetration.
Preferably, the outer sheath is made from Low Smoke Zero Halogen material The inner tubes are made of a material which is moisture proof and also has a low coefficient of friction.Tbe advantages of the combined properties of these materials are that the moisture proof tubes together with the Halogen free outer sheath provides a long term protection against moisture when staled in external ducting that mar become waterlogged, and the fire resistant and low toxicity properties allow the cable to be used indoors.
Preferably, the space inside the sheath and between the internal tubes is filled with yam such as Kevlar;,or other similar material which win provide sufficient tensile strength for the design and also offer a higb degree of protection against Rodents.
Many currently available cables use a gel to fifl the space within the inner tubes between the fibres, which is messy, difficult to remove and can cause problems when terminating or interconnecting cables. The gel is used to provide botch protection from water ingress and provide lubrication to the individual fibres within the tubes The invention offs s cable with tubes that do not require, or contain gel or any other water blocking material Preferably, the inner tubes each contain between two and sixteen individual optic fibres In the preferred embodiment of the invention there are three inner tubes which between them can house up to forty eight individual fibres. The individual fibres may be Singlemode, Multimode or a composite of Single and Multimode.
The inner tubes may be colour coded as indeed can the individual coated fibres.
Preferably, the entire cable structure is totally non metallic.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with the reference to the accompanying drawing which is a cross sectional view through the cable according to the invention with one of the individual fibres shown enlarged.
The illustrated fibn optic cable 10 comprises of an outer sheath 11 typically made of Low Smoke Zero Halogen materiaL The outer sheath 11 houses three individual tubes 12, 13, 14 each of which houses several individually coloured optical fibres, one of which b indicated by the numeral 16. One coated fibre 16 is shown enlarged.
Each optical fibre 16 has the usual primary and secondary coating, 17 and 18.
One tube, 12, 13 or 14 can house up to sixteen individually coated fibres 16.
The individual fibres 16 can be of various types, sich as Singlemode, Multimode or composite of both The space 20 between the individual tubes, 12, 13, 14 is filled with aramid yarn such as Kevlar. Other materials with equivelant strength and protection properties may be used.
The individual tubes 12, 13, 14 are typically made from Polypropylene or alternative materials with equivelant properties with particular respect to moisture protection and low coefficient of friction. The space between the fibres within the individual tubes are -filliL Typical dimensions of the cabk are as:- Sheath 11 outer Diameter 9.5mm Sheath 11 Inner Diameter 7.6mm Tubes 12,13,14 Diameter 4.0mm Primuy fibre coating 125 Micron Secondary fibre coating 250 Micron
