Abstract

A support for a bank of electrical outlet sockets comprises a receptacle 12 for receiving the electrical outlet sockets 14 connected to a clamping member 22 adapted to be releasably clamped to an overhang of a desk 26 or the like.

Description

ELECTRICAL SOCKET SUPPORT This invention relates to an electrical mains socket support and in particular relates to such a support to enable electrical mains sockets to be located on desks or other furniture.
Electrical equipment generally, and computers and associated peripherals in particular, are proliferating in the work place both in offices and factories or workshops. Such equipment requires an increasing number of electrical mains outlet sockets to be powered from. Usually the number of fixed sockets available is soon exhausted and banks of extension sockets are often employed to provide the necessary electrical supply for all equipment. This often results in a proliferation of wires trailing about the workplace which can contravene health and safety regulations.
The invention seeks to provide a simple support for a bank of electrical outlet sockets which can be conveniently mounted on a desk or other piece of equipment without permanently damaging it, e.g. by using screws.
According to the present invention there is provided a support for a bank of electrical outlet sockets which comprises a receptacle for receiving the electrical outlet sockets connected to a clamping member adapted to be releasably clamped to an overhang of a desk or the like.
The receptacle for the sockets may be of a very similar configuration to that used for a standard floor mounted or floor standing bank of electrical outlet sockets but, in accordance with the invention, is connected to clamping means whereby the whole can be clamped to a desk or the like. The provision of a releasable clamping means ensures that the article can be moved or removed as necessary and damage to the furniture is avoided by the use of non-intrusive fixings, i.e.
no screws or the like. It is an advantage of the socket of the invention that wires can be kept off the floor since desk top apparatus can be plugged directly into the, desk top bank of sockets and only a single lead taken from this to the nearest electrical mains outlet.
The support of the invention may be made of a variety of materials but it is currently preferred to extrude it from a metal such as aluminium.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view through the support of the invention with the electrical sockets removed; and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the complete device.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the support generally designated 10 comprises a receptacle 12 for electrical outlet sockets 14. End plates 16 complete the upper portion of the device and are held in place by means of screws or bolts 18 engaging with suitable complementary holders 20. The receptacle 12 is extruded from aluminium in one piece with a clamping portion 22 which is designed to fit over the overhang 24 of a desk 26. One or more bolts 28 or the like may be provided whereby to clampingly engage the overhang 24 within the clamping device 22. The distal end of the bolt 28 may be covered with felt, rubber, or the like resilient material to avoid damage to the underside of the desk top. To prevent the relatively soft aluminium thread becoming damaged, a steel bush may be inserted in the base of the clamp 22 to take each bolt 28.
The sockets 14 may, of course, be replaced by European, American or other electrical outlet sockets or, indeed, by any other suitable electrical outlet sockets such as telephone or other communication sockets without departing from the principle of the invention. A switch 30 may also be provided as is known in the art. They may also contain items such as spike filters and surge protectors.
In use, the clamping portion 22 is slipped over the overhang 24 of a desk 26 and the bolt or bolts 28 tightened to clamp it in place. The bank of sockets 14 is then facing the user at a convenient angle and desk top electrical equipment such as computers, calculators, dictating machines, or the like may be plugged in. The wires of these various forms of apparatus will remain on the desk top rather than trailing across the floor as formerly. A single cable from the sockets (not shown) is taken to the nearest electrical outlet socket. This arrangement is both safer and less unsightly than floor standing socket banks.
An aluminium, or other material, e.g. plastics, strip may be provided to be inserted between the lower face of the clamp 22 and underside of the overhang 24 to further minimise the possibility of damage, e.g. to expensive desks, from the bolts 28.
The socket support of the invention provides a simple, inexpensive and very convenient solution to the problem of trailing wires from electrical apparatus in the workplace. to the present invention there is provided a support for a bank of electrical outlet sockets which comprises a receptacle for receiving the electrical outlet sockets connected to a clamping member adapted to be releasably clamped to an overhang of a desk or the like.
