Abstract

An attachment loop that may be used with a harness (e.g. attached to a waistband 12, Figure 1) has a loop portion 20 which is reinforced by a plastics strip 26. The loop is slidably attached to the band 12 by further loops of elastic material 28 located on portions 22, 24. The sliding feature of the loop allows it to be positioned correctly on the harness depending on the size of the user, and the loop alone may be replaced if it becomes worn, removing the need to replace the whole harness.

Description

A SLIDABLE LOOP The present invention relates to a slidable loop which can be used in conjunction with a harness of the type commonly used by climbers, mountaineers and other people, for example, those working at height such as steeplejacks.
Existing harnesses include a fixed loop which is an integral part of the waist belt. The leg portions of the harness are attached to the waist belt of the harness by a length of webbing which passes through the fixed loop on the waist belt. This fixed loop is known as the tie-in point. Depending upon the waist size of the user, the waist belt may not always be symmetrically positioned which means that the tie-in point, which is at a fixed position thereon, is not always in its ideal central position.
The present invention seeks to provide an arrangement whereby the waist belt and any items attached can be symmetrically positioned on the wearer and the tie-in point can always be centrally located.
The present invention provides a slidable loop for use with a harness, the slidable loop comprising a length or lengths of webbing shaped to include a looped portion, the looped portion having stiffening means, and the slidable loop having attachment means enabling the loop to be slidably located on the waist belt of a harness.
The stiffening can comprise a length of plastics material stitched to the looped portion.
The attachment means can be located on side portions which are integral with the looped portion of the slidable loop.
The attachment means can comprise one or more loops of elastic material.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of slidable loop accordingly to the present invention mounted on the waist belt of a harness and Figure 2 is an elevation of the slidable loop shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a slidable loop (10) mounted on the waist belt (12) of a harness (not shown).
The slidable loop comprises a length of webbing (14) which is shaped and stitched together at locations (16, 18) to provide a loop portion (20) and two side portions (22, 24).
The looped portion (20) is maintained in the shape of a letter "D" by means of a reinforcing strip in the form of a length of plastics material (26) which is attached to the looped portion (20) by stitching.
To enable the loop (10) to be attached to the waistband (12) at least one loop of elastic material (28) is provided on each side portion (22, 24). If required, two loops (28) can be provided on each side portion (22, 24), one on the upper web, as shown, and one on the lower web, which is not shown.
In use the waist belt (12) will usually be threaded through the upper two elastic loops (28) so that the belt passes over the reinforcing portion (26). In embodiments where there are additional loops on the lower webs of the side portions (22, 24) the waist belt could be threaded through those instead so as to pass along that portion of the slidable loop opposite to the reinforcement (26). Preferably, however, the waist belt is threaded through the upper two of the loops (28) and a pad (not shown) is threaded through the lower pair of elastic loops (28) so that the waist belt is held securely to the pad.
It will be appreciated that because the loop (10) can be moved relative to the waistband (12) whatever the girth of the wearer the loop can be centrally located to provide the correct tying-in location for attachment of the leg portions of the harness.
Also, it will be appreciated that the slidable loop can be replaced if it wears for any reason. This is in contrast to the existing designs where if the tying-in loop becomes worn then either the whole harness or at least the waist belt has to be discarded.
The slidable loop can be manufactured separately to the rest of the harness and added at final assembly stage of production.
The plastic stiffener makes the tie-in point more defined and more accessible, thus easing tying/clipping in and thereby improving the safety and performance of the harness.
The elastic loops (28) are pre-threaded onto the length of webbing (14) thereby ensuring that no width is lost through sewing the elastic to the webbing at any time.
