Abstract

A motor vehicle jacking point comprises a retainer 16 secured to the vehicle structure and a separable adaptor 24 detachably secured to the retainer, the adaptor cooperating with means for lifting the vehicle. The retainer 16 may be a plastics moulding and may serve to spread the load from the lifting means over part of the structure. The adaptor may comprise a threaded fastener 30 cooperating with the retainer to attach the adaptor to the retainer and also a hand grip portion to facilitate its attachment. The adaptor may be used to secure a spare wheel in a spare wheel well (figure 3).

Description

A Jacking Point for a Motor Vehicle This invention relates to jacking points for motor vehicles and in particular to a jacking point arranged to co-operate with a trolley jack.
It is known to provide a jacking point on a motor vehicle to co-operate with a jack to raise the vehicle from the ground. There are existing jacking points in use which do not provide easy co-operation with certain types of jack, such as a trolley jack which has a substantially circular and concave lifting cup.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved jacking point for a motor vehicle.
According to the invention there is provided a jacking point for a vehicle comprising a retaining means which is fixed to a structure of the vehicle at an underside point and a separable adapter block comprising a fastener member arranged to co-operate with the retaining means to attach the adapter block to the structure and being arranged in use to co-operate with a lifting means to raise the vehicle.
The retaining means may further comprise a spreader plate to spread the load from the lifting means over a portion of the structure.
The adapter block may comprise a hand grip portion to facilitate the attachment of the adapter block to the retaining means.
The adapter block may have a spreader face arranged for abutment with the spreader plate.
The locating member and the retaining means may each comprise cooperating threaded fastener portions.
The invention also provides an adapter block for use as part of a jacking point and the adapter block may be adapted to act as a spare wheel retainer for the vehicle.
The invention also provides a vehicle having a plurality of jacking points according to the invention spaced around the underside thereof.
The invention also provides a vehicle having a spare wheel carrier, a spare wheel carried therein and a jacking point according to the invention wherein the adapter block is adapted to retain the spare wheel in the carrier.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a vehicle having a plurality of jacking points according to the invention: Figure 2 is a section through one of the jacking points of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a partial section through a spare wheel carrier of the vehicle of Figure 1.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a vehicle 10 has a plurality of jacking points 12 spaced around its underside, one attached to a sill panel 14 at each end on either side.
Each jacking point 12 comprises a retaining means in the form of a plastics moulding 16 which has a spreader plate 18 with a spigot 20 protruding from its centre which has a barbed member 22 around its upper edge. A threaded hole is formed through the spreader plate 18 and the spigot 20.
The sill 14 has a hole in it and the plastics moulding 16 is attached to the sill 14 by insertion of the spigot 20 into the hole and capture of the spreader plate 18 in abutment with the sill 14 by the barbed member 22.
An adapter block 24 comprises a moulded plastics hand grip portion 26 having a load spreader face 28 and a fastener member in the form of a threaded stud 30 protruding from the centre of the spreader face 28. The spreader face 28 is annular and of substantially the same size as the underside of the plastics moulding 16. The thread on the stud 30 is complimentary to the thread formed in the threaded hole.
The jacking point 12 is assembled by screwing the adapter block 24 into the plastics moulding 16 until the spreader face 28 is brought into abutment with the underside of the plastics moulding 16.
The adapter block 24 is made in a form to substantially conform to the lifting dish of a known automotive trolley jack. The adapter block 24 lowers the height of the sill 14 in the region of the jacking point 12 and increases the effective height such a jack can lift the vehicle 10 for a given ram extension and the additional clearance further provides protection for the sill 14 from potential damage by the jack. The adapter block 24 and the spreader plate 18 act to spread the jacking load over an area of the sill 14 so that it is not concentrated through the thread.
Referring now also to Figure 3, the adapter block 24 is not kept permanently assembled to the plastics moulding 16 and a second use is provided for the adapter block 24 to double its utility and provide a stowage when it is not in use with a trolley jack.
The vehicle 10 also comprises a spare wheel carrier 32 having a spare wheel well 34 formed in the vehicle structure and a pillar 36 extending upwardly from the centre of the wheel well 34. The pillar 36 comprises a tube 38 with an internal thread which is complementary to the thread of the stud 30.
A spare wheel 40 sits in the wheel well 34 and the pillar 36 stops a short distance below the centre of the wheel hub 42. The adapter block 24 is inserted through the hub 42 and screwed into the pillar 36 until the spreader face 28 abuts the hub 42. This retains the spare wheel 40 in position and provides a stowage for the adapter block 24.
The plastics moulding 16 is also arranged to operate with the conventional vehicle 10 jack without the need to employ the adapter block 24. This feature provides a further use for the adapter block 24 in which it could be used as a chock against a wheel to prevent the vehicle 10 rolling during a lifting operation.
The retaining means is not limited to the form provided by this embodiment of the invention and could be included integrally with part of the vehicle structure. For example, the retaining means could be formed as part of the sill panel 14 and comprise a pressed spreader plate 18 with a captive nut welded to the inside of the sill panel 14.
