Abstract

A golf aid comprising at least one pointer (11), and preferably two pointers (11), with an attachment means (14) for securing the pointer normal to the face (21) of a golf club (22). A bridge (44), having concentric rings (47) marked thereon, may extend between two pointers to act as a centring or sighting device.

Description

A Golf Aid Field This invention relates to golf aids and in particular to devices which a golfer can use to provide accurate feedback on how a clubface is aimed at a target.
Backqround Golfers, particularly beginners, sometimes have little appreciation of the direction that a golf ball will take after being struck by a clubface.
The present invention provides a device which a golfer can use to provide accurate feedback on how the clubface is aimed at a target. The device allows both experienced and novice golfers the opportunity to practice aiming the golf club.
Statements of Invention According to the present invention there is provided a golf aid comprising at least one pointer with an attachment means for securing the pointer to the face of a golf club, the attachment means holding the pointer normal to the face of the club.
A further advantage of the invention is that because the pointer gives an indication of the angle of elevation or trajectory required by the ball, the novice player may be helped in the selection of a club to afford a clearance above or below obstacles.
Such a pointer also provides an indication of the elevation angle at which the clubface is offered to the ball and therefore the elevation that a ball will take off the clubface depending upon the angle of delivery of the clubface to the ball.
Preferably the attachment means is a magnet secured to the base of the pointer and which holds the pointer to the clubface of an iron club. The magnet may be of the kind typically used for securing decorative ornaments to refrigerators.
As an aid to putting a pair of spaced apart pointers are secured the clubface of a putter so that in use the pointers pass on each side of the ball. Preferably, the two pointers are linked together by a bridge which in use will allow a golf ball to pass under said bridge.
Preferably, the bridge has a plurality of concentric circular rings thereon normal to the bridge, to act in use as a sight mechanism for centring the ball on the clubface.
The two pointer assembly may be secured to the clubface by magnets or by other suitable means such as resilient clamping means, or flexible thin straps.
Also according to the invention there is provided a method of improving golfing technique in which at least one pointer is mounted on the clubface of a golf club normal thereto, so that the pointer indicates the direction and elevation that ball will take off the club face.
Preferably, for improving putting technique a pair of parallel pointers are secured to the putter face so that they pass either side of the golf ball on making the putting stroke.
Description of Drawinqs Fig 1. is a pointer for use with a club, Fig.2 is side elevation of club having a pointer mounted thereon, Fig.3 is plan view of a club with a pointer mounted thereon, Fig.4 is a front elevation of a second embodiment of the invention for use with putters, Fig.5 is a modified version of the device shown in Fig.4, and Fig.6 is plan view of the device shown in Fig 4.
Detailed Description of the Invention With reference to Fig.l there is shown a pointer 11 comprising a pointer arm 12 having a base 13 to the bottom of which a magnet 14 is affixed. The pointer arm and base may be formed as an integral unit from a plastics material and the magnet 14 secured to the base 13 by means of adhesive.
With reference to Fig.2 and Fig.3 there is shown a pointer 11 secured by its magnet 14 to a clubface 21 of a steel clubhead 22. The clubhead 22 is fixed to a shaft 23 such that the clubface 21 is at a particular angle to the ground G. The pointer 11 is normal to the clubface 21 and makes angle A.
The pointer 11 when fitted to the club indicates the angle that the clubface is offered to the ball and indicates whether the clubface makes a closed angle C or an open angle 0 relative to the desired target.
With reference to Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 there is shown the pointer system adapted for a putting aid. Two pointers 11 are fixed to a putter face 40 on a putter head 41 fixed to a shaft 43. The pointers 11 may be fixed by magnets or other suitable means such as spring clamps. The two pointers 11 are spaced apart by a distance D which is greater than the diameter of a golf ball 42 and are interconnected by a bridge 44. The bridge 44 is a rectangular shape with its top portion 45 normal to its sides 46. The bridge 44 is made of a transparent plastics material and concentric centring rings 47 are formed on the top portion 45 of the bridge by etching or printing to form a sighting device. This will enable a user to centre the ball 42 on the putter face 40.
In use the pointers are aimed at the edges of the hole. An incorrect stroke will result in the ball 42 being struck by a pointer and a correctly centred stroke will cause the ball to run true from between the pointers in the aimed direction.
Practice with the devices shown in Figures 1 to 3, and Figures 4 & 6 should result in an improvement in putting and driving techniques when striking the ball.
With reference to Fig.5 there is shown a modified version of the two pointer device in which the bridge 51 is formed as an arch.
