Abstract

A system is disclosed for transmitting data packets over an emulated local area network (ELAN). Conventional broadcast and multicast transmissions are transmitted over the broadcast unknown server (BUS) channel whilst those transmissions requiring constant latency are transmitted using another dedicated multicast address and corresponding virtual channel. The method is intended to improve the performance of the system in respect of multi-media traffic.
