Abstract

A fastening 1, for holding a vehicle spare wheel on a serrated stud 2, comprises a cup-shaped housing 6 having sprags 10 engaging the stud, and a rotatable cap 7 having a depending cylindrical portion of variable diameter. If maximum diameter surfaces engage the sprags they are forced to release their grip on the stud, thus releasing the fastening.

Description

A FASTENING DEVICE The present invention relates to a fastening device.
A number of problems arise when fastening the spare wheel of a vehicle into its storage position, usually in the boot (trunk) of a vehicle. It is advantageous to have a fixing mechanism which is simple to operate and allows the wheel to be quickly and easily detached. At the same time, however, the mechanism must provide sufficient fastening strength to prevent it from working loose due to the vibrations and shocks received during normal operation of the vehicle. In addition, as the thickness of the hub of the spare wheel can vary according to wheel type, it is preferable to provide a mechanism which provides adequate clamping load substantially independent of wheel hub thickness.
According to the present invention, there is provided a fastening device comprising: a housing slidable, in use, on a stud; a sprag selectively engageable, in use, with the stud; a cap slidable, in use, on the stud and retained within the housing such that it rotates with respect to the housing; the cap being retained such that rotation of the cap relative to the housing, executed without axial movement of the cap relative to the housing, causes the sprag, in use, to be displaced such that the sprag engages with the stud causing the sprag to substantially prevent axial movement of the fastening device along the stud.
Rotation of the cap relative to the housing, executed without axial movement of the cap relative to the housing, may also cause the sprag, in use, to disengage with the stud allowing the fastening device to slide along the stud.
The rotation of the cap relative to the housing may cause the sprag to alternately become engaged and disengaged from the stud. The relative rotation may be restricted to 90" rotation.
The sprag may be biased into or out of engagement with the stud.
The cap may comprise a cylinder of angularly varying diameter such that different rotational orientations of the cap relative to the housing cause the wall of the cylinder to engage and disengage with the sprag, causing the sprag to engage or disengage with the stud.
Preferably the angle between each position of rotational orientation causing engagement or disengagement of the sprags is 90".
Two or more sprags may be used.
The sprags may be formed integrally with the housing.
The cap may be retained in the housing by means of an annular lip on an inner wall of the housing which fits inside an annular cavity in an exterior wall of the cap creating a snap fit, and allowing the cap and housing rotate coaxially.
The invention may further comprise a stud for engaging with the sprag. The stud may have annular serrations along its surface or may be threaded. The stud may be round.
An example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view from one side of the fastener of the present invention in a locked state; and, Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the housing and sprags of the fastener of Figure 1.
Referring to figure 1, a fastener 1 according to the invention is shown. In this particular example the fastener 1 is used for fixing the spare wheel (not shown) of a vehicle into the vehicle boot (trunk). The wheel rests around a stud 2 which is fixed at its lower end 3 onto the vehicle at a position where the spare wheel is stored, for example in the floor of the boot of the vehicle. The stud 2 has serrations 4 along the majority of its length, the serrations 4 extending to the free end 5 of the stud 2 opposite the lower end 3.
The fastener 1 comprises a cap 7 which is retained inside a cup-shaped housing 6 by means of an annular lip 8 on an inner wall of the housing 6. The lip 8 fits inside an annular cavity 9 in an exterior wall of the cap 7, so that the cap 7 and housing 6 can rotate coaxially.
The housing 6 has two sprags 10 positioned opposite one another on an inner wall. Each sprag 10 comprises a foot with gripping serrations, designed to grip the serrations 4 on the stud 2, and a pin 11 positioned to enable engagement with the outside wall of the bottom portion of the cap 7, which has a deformed cylindrical shape with an angularly varying diameter.
When the pins 11 are in contact with points on the cylinder surface having the smaller diametric distance between them no force is exerted upon them by the cap 7.
In this position the inherent bias of the sprags 10 causes them, in use, to grip the serrations 4 of the stud 2 so preventing axial movement of the fastener 1 along the stud 2.
Rotating the cap 7 relative to the housing 6 causes the pins 11 to come into contact with points on the cylinder surface having the larger diametric distance between them. Thus the pins 11 are forced apart against the inherent bias of the sprags 10 and their grip on the serrations 4 of the stud 2 is released, allowing axial movement of the fastener 1 along the stud 2 and removal of the fastener. When the rotation of the cap 7 relative to the housing 6 has been carried out through 90O the pins 11 again come into contact with points on the surface of the cylinder having the smaller diametric distance between them. There are four points on the circumference of the cylinder where there is the larger diameter and four points on the circumference where there is the smaller diameter, meaning that in one revolution of the cap 7 relative to the housing 6, the sprags 10 engage and disengage with the stud 2 four times, ie. once every 90".
