Abstract

A wrist watch 10 comprises a casing 11 and analogue and digital time display devices 30 and 20 held inside the casing 11 for displaying time in analogue and digital forms. The analogue time display device 30 is a watch movement 31 having time indicators 32. The digital time display device 20 is a transparent liquid crystal display panel 24 at a position overlying the analogue time indicators 32. A watch integrated circuit 21 controlling the display panel 24, and a circuit board 22 which supports the integrated circuit 21 extends around the analogue time display device 30.

Description

WRIST WATCH The present invention relates to a dual-display wrist watch.
According to the invention, there is provided a wrist watch comprising a casing and analogue and digital time display devices held inside the casing for displaying time in analogue and digital forms, wherein the analogue time display device is formed by a watch movement and a plurality of time indicators driven by the movement to indicate analogue time, and wherein the digital time display device is formed by a transparent liquid crystal display panel for indicating digital time at a position overlying the analogue time indicators, a watch integrated circuit controlling the display panel, and a circuit board which supports the integrated circuit and extends at least partially around the analogue time display device Preferably, the circuit board extends substantially around the analogue time display device.
More preferably, the circuit board has an aperture to extend completely around the analogue time display device, through which aperture the analogue time is readable.
It is further preferred that the digital time display device is held in position by means of a holder having an aperture inside which the analogue time display device is provided, said aperture being aligned substantially with the aperture of the circuit board.
More preferably, the display panel and the circuit board are fixed to opposite top and bottom sides of the holder.
In a preferred embodiment, the analogue time display device is located inside the aperture of the holder as a press fit.
It is preferred that the holder has a pocket for holding a battery cell to supply power to the digital time display device.
Preferably, the analogue and digital time display devices are powered by separate battery cells.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in the form of an exploded perspective of an embodiment of a wrist watch in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a wrist watch 10 embodying the invention, which watch 10 has a generally flat casing 11 (shown schematically only) including a base lid 12 and a pair of straps (or a bracelet) 13 connected to respective opposite sides of the casing 11. The wrist watch 10 incorporates a digital time display 20 and an analogue time display 30 which are both positioned inside the casing 11 by means of a plastics holder 14. The holder 14 has a central aperture 15 having a lower side which expands into an enlarged bottom recess 16.
The digital time display 20 is formed by a watch integrated circuit 21, a printed circuit board 22 which has a central aperture 23 and supports the integrated circuit 21 on one side of the aperture 23, and a transparent liquid crystal time display panel 24 for indicating time in a digital form under the control of the integrated circuit 21. The display panel 24 is held against, thus covering, the top side of the holder 14 by means of a glass plate 17 and four associated screws 18. The glass plate 17 also acts as a crystal of the overall wrist watch 10.
The circuit board 22 has external shape and size generally the same as that of the holder 14 and is secured against the bottom side of the holder 14 just outside the bottom recess 16, by means of four screws 25, with the respective apertures 23 and 15 in alignment. The circuit board aperture 23 has generally the same shape as the holder aperture 15 but is slightly larger. The display panel 24 is electrically connected to the circuit board 22, on the same side as the integrated circuit 21, by means of a bar of silicone conductive inter-connectors 26 which is placed therebetween through a slot 19 of the holder 14 adjacent the aperture 15. On the opposite side, the holder 14 has a pocket 27 to hold a button battery cell 28 for operating the digital time display 20. The other components of the digital watch circuit, such as quartz and resistors 29, are mounted on the remaining two sides of the circuit board 22.
The analogue time display 30 is formed by a watch movement 31, a set of hour/minute/second hands 32 driven by the movement 31 to indicate time in an analogue form, and a dial plate 33 supported by the movement 31 immediately behind the time hands 32. The movement 31 is smaller than the dial plate 33, which in turn has shape and size almost the same as that of the aperture 15 of the holder 14. The movement 31 contains a button battery cell (not shown), as an independent power source, for operation.
The analogue time display 30 is installed inside the bottom recess 16 of the holder 14 and held in position by the dial plate 33 engaging, as a releasable press fit from below, within the aperture 15 of the holder 14. The time hands 32 and dial plate 33 are viewable through the overlying display panel 24 and glass plate 17 for time reading.
In the assembled condition, the circuit board 22 of the digital time display 20 is disposed or extends (completely) around the analogue time display 30 such that the analogue time display 30 may be installed or removed through the aperture 23 of the circuit board 22, independently of and without the need to disassemble the digital time display 20. This greatly simplifies both the assembly and the repair'of the wrist watch 10.
It is envisaged that the circuit board 22 may not necessarily be in the form of a complete ring, provided that it is disposed laterally or beside and extending at least partially around the analogue time display 30.
The invention has been given by way of example only, and various other modifications of and/or alterations to the described embodiment may be made by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as specified in the appended claims.
