Abstract

A half-circular threaded neckpiece is heat sealed into a film or laminate pouch for use in juxtaposition with another such pouch so that the two neckpieces together form a circular neck engageable by a threaded member such as of a mixer or nozzle. This enables two reactive constituents, eg of adhesive, to be kept separately in the two pouches but dispensed simultaneously by squeezing both pouches. The two pouches can be of different dimensions to provide the appropriate ratio of the two constituents.

Description

POUCH PACKAGING FOR 2 PART REACTIVE CHEMICALS This invention relates to a packaging system for 2 part reactive chemical products based on the "pouch" style of packaging and utilising a neckpiece of semi-circular design.
Pouch packaging of a single part chemical is a well known packaging system that uses a bag or pouch made of film or foil laminate sheet formed into a heat sealed envelope which is then filled by machine or by hand with product. The final sealing of the pouch after inserting the product is by heat sealing.
Pouch packaging of a 2 part (resin and catalyst) reactive chemical has, up to now been confined to the 'mixing in the bag' style of pouch packaging, whereby the product is heatsealed into the pouch in two separate parts separated by a closure device to stop the individual components becoming mixed. To use the product the closure device is removed and the two components are handmixed by kneeding and then extruded by opening the pouch, usually by cutting off a corner.
The disadvantage of this form of 2 part pouch packaging is :1. After mixing, the 2 part adhesive has a limited use life before it cures and the total contents of the bag must be used or discarded 2. When extruding the mixed adhesive the formed orifice cannot be controlled either in flow size or placement.
3. The nature of the flexible pouch with a cut orifice allows the possibility of coming into contact with the adhesive.
According to the present invention, there is provided for the 2 part adhesive product a separate and individual pouch for each component (resin and catalyst). Sealed into each pouch is a moulded half circular neckpiece shaped so that when the 2 pouches are brought together, they form a conventional circular threaded neckpiece, allowing a static mixer or nozzle to be fitted to the neck. The 2 components are mixed in the static mixer and not in the pouch. Extrusion of the mixed components can be manually controlled by holding the mixer tube and compressing the pouches simultaneously, either by rolling up the pouches by hand or by a mechanical device such as a key.
The advantage of this 2 part packaging is:1. The 2 chemicals are only brought together in the static mixer tube or nozzle, thereby minimising useage to the amount that is required.
2. The 2 chemicals can be kept apart for storage purposes and brought together at the point of use.
3. There is improved control of the product extrusion by use of a static mixer or nozzle.
4. There is minimum wastage of the product by maximising extrusion with the use of a key.
5. The ratio of resin to catalyst can be changed by maintaining an equal length dimension of both pouches but varying the width dimensions of one of the pouches during manufacture 6. When it is necessary to mix the 2 chemicals by hand, a conventional nozzle can be used to extrude the correct ratios in the quantity required.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1.

Description of operation.
2 part reactive chemical such as but not limited to - epoxy, polyester, polyurethane or acrylic sealant or adhesive is inserted into the 2 individual pouches, resin in one pouch catalyst in the other, the ratio of the 2 chemicals being a variable of the width of one of the pouches. The inserting of chemical is done either through the neckpiece or through a prepared opening in the side edge of the film or laminate.
The neckpiece is sealed with a closure or the edge is heat sealed.
The pouches are brought together at the semi-circular neckpiece of each pouch, forming a conventional circular threaded neckpiece.
A threaded static mixer or nozzle of the type recommended for the product is screwed onto the neckpiece and secures both pouches.
A key is placed over the combined ends of the 2 pouches and rotated to extrude the 2 chemicals.

Claims (5)

Claims. 1. Pouch packaging for 2 part reactive chemicals that uses a threaded neckpiece of semi-circular shape heat sealed into a film or laminate pouch that, when fitted together with another threaded neckpiece of semi-circular shape, will form a conventional circular neckpiece, allowing a mixer or nozzle to screw onto the neckpiece(s) and secure them. 2. Pouch packaging for 2 part reactive chemicals as claimed in claim 1 whereby the pouches, when located together, can be extruded in the required ratio by maintaining an equal length dimension of both pouches but varying the width dimension of one of the pouches. 3. Pouch packaging for 2 part reactive chemicals as claimed in claim 1 and 2 whereby the 2 pouches when located together can be extruded in the required ratio by the use of a key. 4. Pouch packaging for 2 part reactive chemicals as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the 2 pouches, of similar shape, but not necessarily equal volume, are brought together to form a single, 2 part compartmental pouch. Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows Claims.
1. Pouch packaging for 2 part reactive chemicals comprising two flexible pouches formed from a film or laminate and hingedly connected at one end, a threaded part neckpiece of semi-circular shape being heat sealed into each pouch at the end opposite said hinge, the arrangement being such that when the two pouches are hinged together so that one pouch overlies the other, the two part neckpieces form a composite circular neckpiece onto which a mixer or nozzle can be screwed to secure the two part neckpieces together.
5. Pouch packaging for 2 part reactive chemicals substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in figures 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
