Abstract

A personal alarm which has added features for the discharge of fluids 7 which when reaching the atmosphere produce a foul odour and spray out a tracer element which can be used to identify an agressor. The discharge of the fluids and production of a disorientating sound are achieved simultaneously with the depression of an actuator 3.

Description

Improvements to Propellant Powered Alarms This invention relates to propellant powered alarms which when activated produce a high pitched sound whilst simultaneously emitting a fluid such as a tracer which is capable of being used forensically.
Propellant powered alarms are in common use as personal protection devices but they only produce a high pitched disorientating sound and this invention relates to increasing their versatility and deterrent effect by incorporating a facility to discharge a forensic tracer into the immediate surroundings whilst simultaneously emitting a high pitched screech.
Incorporated with this dual function could also be the discharge of a fluid carrying a foul odour.
A small amount of the forensic trace element found on the clothing or skin of an aggressor could provide evidence leading to conviction.
Figure 1 shows a propellant powered alarm which also has the facility to discharge fluids capable of producing a foul odour and acting as a tracer. When the actuator 3 is depressed a mixture of gaseous and liquid propellant, together with fluid for producing a foul odour and tracer 7, pass from the canister up the tube 4 and into the housing 10. The propellant and liquid flows into the housing at 8 from where it passes into an annular chamber 9. The gaseous element of the discharge escapes past diaphragm 5 to produce a sound whilst the liquid accumulated in chamber 7 passes under the influence of propellant pressure through hole 1 and into tube 2 and reaches the atmosphere at exit 6 where the odour producing fluid evaporates to produce a foul smell and the liquid tracer which is in the form of small particles can settle on the body or clothing of an agressor. Thus as a result of a single depression of actuator 3 there is simultaneous discharge of tracer and odour producing fluid together with a high pitched blast of sound.

Claims (3)

Claims
1. A personal deterrent which on depression of the actuator simultanously produces a high pitched sound and discharge of fluid such as those to produce an odour and tracer.
2. An alarm as in claim 1 where the liquid element is sealed in a pressurised container together with a liquified propellant and the two are simultaneously discharged from the container into the actuator.
3. An actuator which receives the gaseous and liquid constituents as in claim 2 having a discharge tube through which the pressurised fluid flows from any point in the annular chamber to any suitable exit point on the actuator surface whilst the gaseous part of the propellant passes over the diaphragm in order to produce a high pitched sound.
