Description
Security Devices
The present invention relates to security devices, and particularly but not exclusively to security devices for use on windows.
For reasons of security, openable windows for example in buildings are often fitted with a security locking device in an attempt to prevent unauthorised opening of the window. Conventionally, such devices are located on the inside of the window to provide locking of the window from inside the building or other structures in which the window is located.
However, in certain circumstances it would be desirable to be able to actuate such locking security devices from outside the building, but conventionally this is not possible.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantage of the prior art.
According to the present invention there is provided a security device for a closure member, the device comprising retaining means mountable on one side of a closure member or a frame on which the closure member is movable, which means is movable between a first position in which the means permits the closure member to be movable on the frame and a second position in which the means retains the closure member against movement on the frame and in a closed condition, and actuating means locatable on an opposite side of the closure member or frame and cooperable with the retaining means to provide for selective movement of the retaining means between said first and second positions from the said opposite side of the closure member.
Preferably the retaining means is locatable on the inside of a structure, such as a building, in which the closure member is located, and the actuating means is locatable on the outside of the structure.
Preferably the actuating means comprises security means to prevent unauthorised movement of the retaining means thereby. The security means may comprise lock means, preferably key-operated.
The actuating means may be connected to the retaining means through the closure member or frame. Preferably connecting means extends between the receiving means and the retaining means, desirably such that upon rotation of the actuating means causes movement of the retaining means between said first and second positions. Preferably the retaining means is mounted to be pivotally movable between said first and second positions. The retaining means may comprise a retaining member pivotally mounted to a base member fixed to the frame or closure member. The retaining member is preferably arranged to be rotatable through approximately 900 between said first and second positions, and is desirably rigidly attached to the connecting means. The retaining member preferably extends between the closure member and frame when the retaining means is in the second position, retaining the closure member in closed condition on the frame.
Preferably fixing means is provided between the retaining means and actuating means to fix the retaining means and actuating means in fixed relation on the closure member or frame. Preferably the fixing means extends between the receiving means and the base member to provide for clamping of the closure member or frame therebetween. The fixing means may comprise one or more bolts or similar means extending therebetween through suitable passage(s) provided in the closure member or frame.
A base plate may be provided as part of the actuating means, and may be connectable to the fixing means.
The device is preferably mountable to a closure member, which member is preferably a window and preferably a pivotally movable window operable in an outward direction relative to the structure in which it is located. The retaining means may comprise a device generally as described in our earlier
Preferably retaining means are provided, operable to prevent relative sliding movement of the frame and closure member, to prevent the retaining means becoming disengaged thereby while in the second position. The retaining means may comprise a hook formation and a cooperating boss formation. Preferably the hook formation is carried by the retaining means, the boss formation being carried by the closure member or frame.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a closure member assembly comprising a closure member, such as a window, a frame on which the member is movable between an open and closed condition, and a security device as described above in any of the preceding seven paragraphs.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a security device according to the present invention fixed in position on a window frame retaining the window frame in a closed condition, the frame shown in cross-section generally along the lines I-I of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 shows a device according to the present invention in position on a window frame, in the direction II-II of Fig. 1; and
Figs. 3 and 4 correspond to Figs. 1 and 2, showing a modified embodiment of the invention, with Fig. 3 being a cross-section generally along the lines III-III of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 being a cross-section generally along the lines IV-IV of Fig. 3.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a security device 10 for a closure member W, comprises retaining means 12 mountable on one side S1 of R closure member W which means 12 is movable between a first position in which the means 12 permits the closure member W to be movable on a frame F on which the closure member W is movable and a second position (Fig. 2) in which the means 12 extends over the frame F to retain the closure member W against movement on the frame F and thereby in a closed condition, and actuating means 14 locatable on the opposite side S2 of the closure member W, the actuating means 14 being cooperable with the retaining means 12 to provide for selective movement of the retaining means 12 between said first and second positions from the said opposite side S2 of the closure member W.
In more detail, the actuating means 14 comprises a cylinder 16 fixed in a base plate 18. The cylinder 16 comprises a tumbler (not shown) to receive a key 20. A bar 22 extends between the tumbler and the retaining means 12 to connect the retaining means 12 and actuating means 14. The bar 22 is connected to rotate with the tumbler, such that upon insertion of a correct key 20 into the slot of the tumbler and rotation of the key 20 rotation of the bar 22 is effected, which in turn causes rotation of the retaining means 12 between the first and second positions as will be explained. The bar 22 is generally rectangular in cross-section and is located in a correspondingly shaped recess 50 in the tumbler whereby relative rotation between the bar 22 and the tumbler is prevented.
The retaining means 12 comprises a base member 24 mounted to the side S1 of the closure member W, and a retaining arm 26 pivotally mounted at one end thereof on the base member 24 about a pivot 28. The retaining arm 26 is movable about the pivot 28 between the first position in which the arm 26 lies generally along the length of the base member 24, and thereby does not extend between the closure member W and the frame F and the second position wherein the retaining arm 26 is generally perpendicular to the base member 24, wherein the arm 26 extends across the closure member W and the frame F to prevent movement and opening of the closure member W on the frame, generally in the direction 0 as shown in Fig. 2.
A spacing button 30 may be provided on the free end of the retaining arm 26 to bear against the frame F when the retaining means is in the second position to pull the closure member W onto the frame F in the closed condition.
The pivot 28 extends through the base member 24 to form two generally parallel spaced arms 42 which between them define a generally planar space 44 in which the end 46 of the bar 22 locates. A securing pin or rivet 48 (Fig. 2) connects the bar 22 and the pivot 28 to hold the pivot 28 and bar 22 against relative rotation.
The retaining means 12 may be generally of the type described in our earlier British Patent Application No. 2302128A, and may comprise locking means as described therein.
Fixing bolts 32 extend between the base member 24 and the base plate 18, to fix the retaining means 12 and actuating means 14 together in position on the closure member W with the closure member W clamped therebetween.
The bolts 32 are passed through recessed passages 34 in the base member 24 and corresponding apertures formed through the closure member W to threadedly engage in respective internally threaded bosses 36 provided on the base plate 18.
Caps 38 are locatable in the recessed passages 34 over the heads 40 of the bolts 32 to cover the bolts from view.
Figs. 3 and 4 show an alternative embodiment in which many features are identical or closely similar to corresponding features of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and are therefore given the same reference numerals in the interests of clarity.
The second embodiment is designed to overcome a possible weakness of the first embodiment, as follows. If an attempt is made to move the closure member W in the direction 0 while the retaining arm 26 is in the second position, this movement is prevented as described above and the closure member is therefore locked. However, in some applications, particularly if weak extrusions are used at F or W, or if large windows are installed, so that the elements F and W are long, or if excessive force is used, such as a forced entry by jemmy, there is the possibility that the spacing button 30 could ride along the outer surface of the frame F as the force is applied, perhaps allowing the frame F to distort sufficiently to pop out from behind the button 30, thereby releasing the lock effect.
This is overcome in the second embodiment by providing a boss 60 attached to the frame F and having an oversize head 62, able to cooperate with a hook portion 64 formed on the retaining arm 26. Normally, the boss 60 will be spaced slightly from the hook 64, as shown in Fig. 4, but in the event of excessive force being applied to the arrangement, any distortion of the frame F and closure member W will tend to bring the hook 64 into engagement with the boss 60, thereby preventing further movement and in particular, preventing the frame F from popping out from under the retaining arm 26.
Consequently, security is further ensured.
The use of the devices described can now be set out. By virtue of the many similarities between the two embodiments, this will be done by way of a single description covering the use of either embodiment.
In use, it is primarily intended that the security device 10 is fixed to a pivotally outwardly openable window, although it will be appreciated that application to other closure members such as doors etc. is within the scope of the present invention.
To mount the security device 10 to an opening frame of a window W, two appropriately spaced holes are drilled through the closure member W. The end of the holes in the outer side S2 of the window W are enlarged to receive the bosses 36. A further, central hole is drilled in the window frame W to receive the cylinder 16 in the outer side S2, and the pivot 28 on the inner side S1, and to enable passage of the bar 22 through the window W.
The base plate 18 with the cylinder 16 securely fixed centrally therein, is offered to the outer surface S2, such that the bosses 36 and the cylinder 16 locate in the respective apertures such that the base plate 18 lies flat on the surface S2. The retaining means 12 is offered up to the surface S1 such that the apertures 34 are in alignment with the holes passing through the window
W. The respective bolts 32 are then pushed through the base member 24 through the holes in the window W to cooperably engage in the threaded recesses in the respective bosses 36. As the bolts are tightened, to clamp the closure member W between the retaining means 12 and the actuating means 14, the lock bar 22 extends into the recess 50 in the tumbler thereby connecting the tumbler and the bar 22 in a manner that provides rotation of the bar 22 upon rotation of the key 20. When the bolts 32 are tightened, the caps 38 are pushed in position thereover, and the device 10 is in position for use.
The retaining arm 26 can be manually gripped from inside the building or other structure in which the window is located using the finger grip formation 52 and directly moved between the first and second positions. This movement causes rotation of the bar 22 and the tumbler in which the key 20 is locatable. This of course is of no detriment.
The principal advantage of the device 10 of the present invention is that the retaining arm 26 can be moved between the first and second positions from outside a building using the key 20. Rotation other than with the appropriate key 20 from outside the window is not possible. To effect movement with the key 20, the key 20 is inserted into the tumbler, whereupon the key 20 is rotated in a direction to correspond with the desired direction of rotation of the arm 26.
As the key 20 is rotated, the bar 22 rotates therewith, which in turn rotates the pivot 28 and the arm 26. Once the retaining arm 26 has been moved to the desired position, the key 20 can be retracted from the tumbler for safekeeping.
The device 10 is useful when for example a key holder requires to unlock
the windows from outside to provide access therethrough. Further, the device
10 is useful wherein an authorised key holder wishes to secure the window W
closed without having to enter the building to effect same.
It is to be appreciated that the device 10 can be used on any suitable opening member, such as a door, hatch and the like. Moreover, it is to be appreciated that the securing device may be fixed to the fixed frame on which a closure member is movable, especially where the closure member opens in an inward direction.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention. For example, the movement actuating means may comprise any suitable security means other than a key 20. Any suitable fixing means may be used to fix the device 10 to the closure member or frame.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
