Abstract

A bolt B is held in a retracted position by an intumescent plug E and is biassed by a spring C towards the actuated condition. The bolt assembly is mounted on a fire door in a position such that it will be engaged in the event of fire before substantial warping of the door occurs so that an intumescent strip may have time to secure the door at its periphery.

Description

THE FIRE BOLT This invention relates to a device that would give better integrity to a timber fire door made from a standard blank.
A fire door made from a standard blank tends to curl away from the rebate or stop of a door frame in the event of the fire starting on the opening face. This sometimes does not allow for the intumescents to exfoliate fast enough to lock the door into the frame before it curls and therefore allows the fire to pass round the curled door blank.
The Fire Bolt would be reached by the heat of the fire sooner and the intumescent material would exfoliate allowing the bolt to shoot into the keep in the frame and therefore holding the door for that extra time to allow the intumescent around the perimeter of the door to do its job and completely seal the door to the frame.
FIG 1 Shows basic outline of the Fire Bolt in normal mode.
FIG 2 Shows the intumescent material exfoliated and the spring extended firing bolt into keep in frame. Note keep allowing for some distortion of door as bolt shooting into slightly slack lateral hole.
The Fire Bolt is an easily fitted device that in the event of a fire would hold the timber fire door in place long enough for the intumescent strip around the perimeter of the door to exfoliate and hold the door in place allowing the door to form a fire break.
The Fire Bolt has to be fitted as close to the front edge of the door as possible allowing for the main intumescent to be interrupted as little as possible.

Claims (5)

1. The Fire Bolt is an item that could easily be mounted into any timber fire door and frame to increase the general integrity of the fire door in the event of a fire.
2. The Fire Bolt, as in claim one, means a device that could provide a simple means of greater fire retention than that of a standard timber fire door.
3. The Fire Bolt, as claimed in 1 and 2, is a bolt fitted to the closing edge, ie opposite edge to hinges, of a standard timber fire door blank, one at the top 169 am down from the top edge and one at the bottom 350mm up from the bottom edge.
4. The Fire Bolt is made up of: a) Barrel b) Bolt c) Spring e) Intumescent Pellet and Plastic f) Keep
5. Method of operation is heat of fire melts plastic and intumescent pellet allows spring to fire bolt into keep in frame hence sealing door to frame.
