Abstract
A flexible core (or cores) is slidable in a bolt body so as to bend to project through a cut-out in the side of the body, in order to prevent withdrawal of the bolt body from a fixed item C. Where a nut is mounted on the bolt, the tip of the flexible core engages in a cut-out in the nut. The flexible core has a cross bar for advance and withdrawal, or operation may be mechanical, or electrical, or spring loaded. The core may have flexible or hinged parts, and the body may also be flexible.
Description
FLEXIBLE SECURITY DEVICE
This invention relates to a security device in the form of a flexible bolt.
This is a locking, securing, tethering device. It was initially invented to enable a windsurfer to be secured to a car via a security cable using existing holes in said windsurfer and without the need for access to both sides of the body of the windsurfer.
It was realised that the flexible bolt could be used to secure many things with access from one side only.
The invention comprises a flexible sliding core within a body that can be rigid or flexible.
Principle of Operation
The key to the system is the distortion or bending of the inner core so as to cause it to protrude through a slot or cut-out from the side of the body of the bolt assembly.
The operation of the flexible bolt is described by way of the accompanying drawings.
Figure li - shows the bolt consisting of items A (the core) and B (the body) in the unlocked position.
Figure lii - shows the bolt inserted into C the item to be locked to.
Figure 1 iii - shows A slid home through Bso that it protrudes from the side of B creating a latching action.
Figure liv - shows a thief secure device D can be fitted through B stopping A being slid back through B.
Figure lv - shows part A and the cross section of B to show their relationship.
The latching action is reversed by sliding A back into B.
Figures 2i and 2ii - shows the cross section of two variations of the bolt system in the unlocked position.
Figures 2iii and 2iv - shows the cross section bolt locked through or into C the item to be secured.
Figure 2v - shows the bolt with a threaded body A passed through C and secured by locking a castle or slotted nut E.
Figure 3 shows the bolt can have multiple sliding cores A.
Figure 4i - shows the bolt used to lock through the skeg bolt hole of a windsurfer C.
Figure 4ii - shows that by item C being of an expandable material (eg rubber) by compressing it using the threaded version of the bolt, figure 2v, it can be secured to a tubular member (eg the mast of a windsurfer).
The sliding action of the bolt can be operated manually or by mechanical or electrical means.
The latch or unlatch of the bolt can be preset, eg spring loaded.
The sliding core can be completely flexible or partially rigid with flexible fittings or partially solid with hinged fittings. In the case of a flexible body both inner and outer can distort to create the latching action.
The body of the device can be round, square or custom built, any shape.
The bolt only requires a reasonable fit through C the item to be locked to, a close tollerance fit is not necessary to have an adequate locking action.
Claims (7)
1 A flexible bolt system is in the form of a locking bolt with a flexible sliding core
that is made to protrude by bending or distorting from the side of the body to lock
or latch it.
2 A flexible bolt as claimed in Claim 1 that also can have a flexible or rigid body.
3 A flexible bolt as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 that the flexible parts can be
hinged.
4 A flexible bolt as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2 and Claim 3 that the moving part
can be partially a rigid and partially flexible.
5 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim whereas the body can be
custom made in any shape or size required.
6 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim as is only limited in its material
of manufacture dependant on its use.
7 A flexible bott as in any preceeding claim that can be meeanically or electrically assisted.
7 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim that has one or more flexible
cores.
8 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim that requires access to only one
side of the item to be locked to or through.
9 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim that does not necessarily require
a close tollerance fit to be secure.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1 A flexible sliding bolt system that has a hollow tubular body and a flexible sliding
core; it can be manually operated to lock and unlock; to lock it, the core is slid
through the body and is made to protrude from the body by being deflected through a hole or cut-out in the side of the body; it * requires accs to only one
side of the item to be locked to, and is locked through a hote which already exists in said item. rt does not require a close tolerance fit to be secure.
2 A flexible bolt as claimed in Claim 1 that can have a flexible or rigid body.
3 A flexible bolt as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 that the moving part can be
partially rigid and partially flexible.
4 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim whereas the body can be
custom made in any shape or size as required.
5 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim as is only limited in its material
of manufacture depend ant on its use.
6 A flexible bolt as claimed in any preceding claim that can have multiple flexible
cores.
