Abstract

A gas cooking appliance comprises at least one oven/grill chamber having an open fronted cavity 1 closable by a door 2, an oven burner 5 disposed in a combustion chamber 4 located beneath the base 3 of the cavity 1, a grill burner 9 disposed in the top of the cavity 1 with a burner cover assembly 16 disposed over and spaced from the grill burner 9 and also spaced from the top 15 of the cavity 1. Products of combustion from the combustion chamber 4 are directed from a rear outlet 7 in the base 3 from the rear to the front of the cavity 1 to an outlet 17 disposed between the top 15 and the burner cover assembly 16 for passage to a flue exhaust outlet 18.

Description

Gas Cooking Appliances This invention relates to gas cooking appliances and more particularly to such appliances which incorporate at least one oven cavity which is also used for grilling purposes.
Known forms of gas cooking appliances which incorporate at least one oven cavity which is also used for grilling purposes incorporate interlock mechanisms or other mechanical adaptions for changing the flue exhaust outlets of the oven cavity to convert its function to either a baking oven or a radiant grill. One such gas cooking appliance is disclosed in GB 2144846A in which an interlock system is provided for preventing the oven door from being closed when the oven is used for grilling, and for ensuring that gas is supplied only to the oven burner OR the grill burner, and in which a manually slidable partition is provided which is positioned adjacent the base of the oven when it is used for grilling and is positioned adjacent the roof of the oven, beneath the grill burner, when the oven is used as a baking oven.
The provision of such interlock systems and manually slidable partitions is disadvantageous, and it is an object of the present invention to provide such a gas cooking appliance in which such means are obviated.
According to the present invention there is provided a gas cooking appliance including at least one oven/grill chamber comprising an open fronted cavity closable by a door, an oven burner disposed in a combustion chamber located beneath the base of said cavity and having a combustion products outlet in said base disposed towards the rear of said cavity, a permanently exposed gas grill burner disposed in the top of said cavity, a metal plate member disposed above and spaced from said gas grill burner and in spaced relationship with the top of said cavity, and a combustion products outlet disposed in the top of said cavity and towards the front thereof for receiving products of combustion from said oven burner or said gas grill burner and for directing said products over the top of said gas grill burner to a flue exhaust outlet disposed in the top and towards the rear of said appliance.
Preferably, a combined oven burner and grill burner control will be provided, and thermoelectric control means associated with said burners for ensuring that said burners cannot both be operated at the same time.
Such an arrangement enables the single cavity to be used as a baking oven or grill without the need for any mechanical adjustment by the user.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1, is a cut-away rear perspective view of a gas cooking appliance in accordance with the present invention shown in oven mode; and Fig. 2, is a similar view of the gas cooking appliance of Fig. 1 shown in grill mode.
The gas cooking appliance shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings comprises an open fronted cavity 1 which is closable by a door 2 which is hinged at the bottom thereof so that it opens outwardly and downwardly by means not shown.
The cavity 1 comprises a base 3 beneath which is disposed a combustion chamber 4 containing a horizontally firing oven gas burner 5 and a thermoelectric flame detection probe 6 which is used to control gas flow to the gas burner 5. The combustion chamber 4 is provided with an outlet 7 in the base 3, disposed towards the rear of and across the back of the base 3. The combustion chamber 4 is also provided with an insulating panel 8 secured to the underside of the base 3 which prevents the base 3 from reaching excessively high temperatures.
In the top of the cavity 1 is disposed a conventional grill burner 9 consisting of a gas supply pipe 10 which extends across the width of the cavity 1 and which has diametrically and horizontally disposed outlet holes (not shown) along its length. The gas supply pipe 10 is supported beneath a fret assembly 11 consisting of a channelled upper plate 12 across the bottom of which is disposed a mesh fret 13 which is heated when the grill burner 9 is ignited. The channelled upper plate 12 is provided with holes 14 in the top thereof for the passage of products of combustion from the grill burner 9.
Above the grill burner 9, and spaced between it and the top 15 of the appliance is a burner cover assembly 16 which is secured to the side and rear surfaces of the cavity 1. An outlet 17 is provided between the burner cover assembly 16 and the top 15 of the appliance which is disposed towards the front of and across the width of the cavity 1, and enables products of combustion either from the oven burner 5 or from the grill burner 9 to be removed from the cavity 1 and directed over the top of the grill burner 9 to a flue exhaust outlet 18 disposed in the top 15 and towards the rear of the appliance.
The gas cooking appliance of Fig. 1 is also provided with a combined oven thermostat and grill tap (not shown) which operates in conjunction with the thermoelectric flame detection probe 6 associated with the oven burner 5 and also in conjunction with a similar probe 19 associated with the grill burner 9 for controlling gas flow to the burners 5 and 9 to ensure that both cannot be used at the same time.
When the gas cooking appliance of Fig. 1 is operated in its oven mode as shown, the oven burner 5 is ignited which causes the base 3 of the cavity 1 to be heated to produce radiant heat in the cavity 1, and also the products of combustion from the oven burner 5 are fed from the outlet 7 into the cavity 1 and directed from the rear to the front of the cavity 1 across any food products e.g. cakes 20 which may be in the cavity 1, the combustion products exiting the cavity 1 via the outlet 17 disposed in the top of the cavity 1 for passage to the flue exhaust outlet 18.
When the gas cooking appliance of Fig. 1 is operated in its grill mode as depicted in Fig. 2, the door 2 is opened and a grill pan 21, containing any food item to be grilled, is inserted into the cavity 1. The grill burner 9 is caused to be ignited to cause the fret assembly 11 to be heated for causing radiant heat to be directed downwards on to the top surface of the grill pan 21. The products of combustion from the grill burner 9 are again exited from the cavity 1 via the outlet 17 and also via one or more holes 22 in the burner cover assembly 16.
It has been found in the appliance of Figs. 1 and 2 that permanent exposure of the grill burner 9, even in the oven mode, is not detrimental to the operation of the appliance, and also even if the door 2 is closed in the grill mode, there is sufficient evacuation of the products of combustion via the outlet 17 so that no detrimental effects are experienced.
