Breech actions, movable-barrel other than drop-down; barrels.-A gun for pro. jecting a captive bolt and having muzzle opening of less diameter than the barrel bore, has a guideway for supporting the moving bolt out of contact with the barrel. The slaughtering piston shown comprises a body part a, a removable barrel b adapted to be secured by a screw 5 and a captive bolt comprising a cylindrical part 13<b>, a conical front part 13<c>, and a rear flange 13<a>. The bolt 13 is frictionally held in the rear position by a conical surface on the flange 13<a> engaging a corresponding surface in a fixed ring 8. The bolt is guided by three rods 7-7<b>, Figs. 1 and 2, passing through holes in the flange and engaging the cylindrical part 13<b> of the bolt. One of the rods 7 is slidably mounted and carries an extractor 12, which is operated by pressing on the projecting front end 7<c> of the rod, the barrel having been removed for this purpose. A projection 14 and flange 15 are provided on the body for resetting the bolt and operating the extractor respectively. A buffer 6b is provided in the barrel. The firing mechanism includes a sliding. spring-pressed rod adapted to be pressed in by a push-piece a<7> and to be held by a trigger a<2> or sear. The pistol may be mounted on a pole or long stock, in which case the sear is operated by a wire. The captive bolt is bored at the rear to fit over a tubular cartridge chamber which is considerably longer than the cartridge. The space in front of the cartridge forms a primary combustion chamber, and the space 10<a> in the bolt a secondary combustion chamber of increased cross-sectional area. The front wall of the boring in the bolt is preferably conical. The cartridge used has a loosely packed charge maintained in place by a wad.
