Abstract
A frame E has a sprung articulated seat B, a foot plate C and a fixed padded shoulder brace A. When the feet are extended, the shoulders are restrained and the power of the whole body is transmitted by the foot plates. The apparatus may be used to power various devices, such as a bicycle.
Description
POWER CHAIR.
Technical The power chair is a device for obtaining the
Field. maximum amount of power from the human body.
Background. Presently human powered machines such as the icc3 are limited to the action of the limbs. The power
chair utiiises the strength of the entire body.
Essential The invention consists of a frame supporting a
Technical padded chair which has restraining shoulder braces
Features. as well as articulated seat and foot plates. The
seat is equipped with a device to return it to the
rest position. By restraining the shoulders the
operator can utilise the power of the whole body
when thrusting down with either one or both feet
together. In this way the the entire body force
bears on the foot plate.
The distance capability of human thrust depending nn
leg length will be from 20 inches (51 cms) upward.
As the average human can easily thrust 200 lbs per
sq inc, transmission through leverage, cog wheel or
hydro, oil suspension etc.,depending on the utility
will exacerbate the power. For example a 5 to 1
pivoted leaver will effect a force of 1000 lbs per sa inch, with a thrust of 200 lbs.
Uses. The Power Chair has a wide range of uses arid can
have its transmission adapted according to the
desired function. Some examples are as follows;- 1. Ari air propeller. 2. A water propeller.
3. A water pump. 4. A water wheel.
5. A dynamo. 6. A Drilling device.
7. A boring device. 8. A weight elevator.
9. A weight lowered. 10. A man powered car.
il. A bicycle ( Speed in excess of 70 mph estimated
quite possible.)
The above name a but few possible uses.
It will prove to be of significant use in the remote
parts of the world where only human power is
available.

This indicates the position of the operator when using either one or both legs to motivate the foot plate. The distance of movement being from F - to - F1, whilst the force is applied directly through the body from the shoulders downward. The foot plate engages the transmission of choice, be it pedals, leavers screws, hydraulic etc.
Claims (1)
- Power Chair.Claims: The apparatus is intended to obtain the maximum power from the human body.It is a frame in which the shoulders are fixed so that when the limbs are extended the total body strength is transmitted to the point of maximum stretch of both feet. The average human can thrust weights upwards of 2001bs through a distance of over 20 inches.Transmission via leverage cogwheel or propellor will increase this gradient.
