Abstract

An internal combustion engine has two parts consisting of a cylinder head and a crankcase either of which may have a common flange surface 4 for receiving flanges, which may also be common, of forward-flow and return pipes (figure 1) of a heat exchanger; flange surface 4 surrounds cooling water outflow 7 and cooling water inflow 8. The forward-flow pipe is connected to cooling water outflow 7 and the return pipe is connected to cooling water inflow 8.

Description

1 2318830 An internal combustion engine The invention relates to an
internal combustion engine with two housing parts consisting of a cylinder head and crankcase respectively, having flange surfaces, provided with orifice cross-sections, for connecting flanges of a forward-flow and return-flow conduit connected to a heat exchanger having cooling-water throughflow.
It is known to provide, located next to the longitudinal side of the cylinder head and crankcase, a heat exchanger having cooling-water throughfiow, which is connected by means of a forward-flow conduit and a return-flow conduit to housing parts of the internal combustion engine which carry cooling water.
It is known, for example, from MTZ Motortechnische Zeitschrift [MTZ Engine Journal] 56 (1995) 6, Figure 13, to provide a flange surface on the top part of the crankcase for the connecting flange of the forward- flow conduit and a flange surface on the cylinder head for the connecting flange of the return-flow conduit.
The present invention seeks to simplify the outlay in terms of the machining of the connections between the conduits leading away from the heat exchanger and the corresponding housing part and to minimize the number of components.
According to the present invention there is provided an internal combustion engine with two housing parts consisting of a cylinder head and crankcase respectively having flange surfaces, provided with orifice cross-sections, for connecting flanges of a forward-flow and return-flow conduit connected to a heat exchanger having cooling water throughflow, wherein the flange surfaces form a common flange surface for connecting flanges of the forward-flow and return-flow conduits on only one of the two housing parts.
The measures according to the invention result in a single flange surface for both conduits on only one housing part. A flange design of this type avoids the need for the more time-consuming machining of two flange surfaces for the forwardflow conduit and return-flow conduit and two different housing parts, such as a cylinder head and crankcase, which has been carried out hitherto. According to the invention, it is necessary merely to machine the single common flange surface which is provided for both conduits and which is arranged only on the crankcase of the 2 internal combustion engine or, if required, only the cylinder head. The fitting of the two conduits is simplified and only one seal is necessary.
Furthermore, it is advantageous to design the connecting flange and the forward-flow and rewrn-flow conduits as a one-part adapter piece, with the result that the number of components can be minimized and, moreover, the pair of conduits connected to the heat exchanger can be fitted even more quickly to the flange surface of the crankcase via the common connecting flange due to the structural unit composed of the pair of conduits and of the connecting flange, especially also since the common connecting flange necessitates only two screw connections.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing and is described in more detail below with reference to an exemplary embodiment. In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows the common connecting flange of the forward-flow and return-flow conduits on the common flange surface on the crankcase, Figure 2 shows merely the common flange surface on the crankcase with orifice cross-sections for the cooling-water outflow and cooling-water inflow, Figure 3 shows the flange surface, with the crankcase, which has a cooling-water conduit arrangement, being illustrated in a top view, and Figure 4 shows the flange surface along the line IV-IV in Figure 3 with the return-flow conduit arrangement.
According to Figures 1 and 2, a flange 3 having a flange surface 4 is formed on the crankcase 1 of a water-cooled multi-cylinder internal combustion engine 2, the said flange having orifice cross-sections 5, 6 for the cooling-water outflow 7 and cooling-water inflow 8.
A forward-flow conduit 10 leading to a heat exchanger 9 and a return-flow conduit 11 leading away from the heat exchanger 9 are provided with a common connecting flange 12. The forward-flow conduit 10, retum-flow conduit 11 and common connecting flange 12 form a structural unit or a one-part adapter piece between the crankcase 1 and heat exchanger 9. This adapter piece serves for quickly connecting or making it easier to fit the single connecting flange 12 to the common flange surface 4 on the crankcase 1.
The conduits running approximately parallel, as forward-flow and returnflow conduits 10, 11, are, on the one hand, connected to the heat exchanger 9 at a 3 distance from one another and, on the other hand, brought closely together towards the connecting flange 12.
The flange 3 contains two threaded bores 13, 14 for fastening screws 15, 16 for firmly connecting the adapter piece, composed of the connecting flange 12 and the forward-flow and return-flow conduits 10, 11, to the flange 3 on the crankcase 1.
The adapter piece, together its two conduits and the connecting flange, consists of dimensionally rigid plastic. The bearing surface of the connecting flange 12 corresponds essentially to the size of the flange surface 4. The forward-flow and return-flow conduits 10, 11 are preformed in such a way that their conduit ends located on the heat-exchanger side correspond exactly to the distance between the water connections 17, 18 and the heat exchanger 9.
As is evident from Figure 3, a cooling-water duct 19 which runs in the crankcase 1 leads to the flange 3, the said duct branching off from an annular space 21 surrounding a cylinder bore 20. The cooling-water duct 19 is connected to the forward-flow conduit 10.
A further cooling-water duct 22, which has, in the crankcase 1, a rectangular run starting from the flange surface 4 and which is connected to the return flow conduit 11, is designed largely as a rising conduit 23 (Figure 4) which opens out at the flange 26 located on the cylinder-head side and to which is connected a waterduct (not illustrated in any more detail) running in the cylinder head 24.
The flange surface 4, which projects slightly on the longitudinal side wall la of the crankcase 1, is located just below a cylinder-head gasket 25 lying between the cylinder head 24 and crankcase 1.
