Abstract
231,856. Moineau, R. J. L. April 4, 1924, [Convention date]. Propelling.-Aircraft are supported and propelled by one or more rotary propellers with their axes parallel to the direction of flight the incidence of the blades being altered cyclically during rotation bv means of an eccentric of which the eccentricity can be varied in magnitude and direction. As shown, the blades are carried by spokes connected' to the main shaft and their rear edges b, b<1> &c. are connected by rods t to a ring rotatable about a centre O<1>, O1<1> which can be moved by the pilot. If O<1> is vertically above the centre 0 of the main shaft the propeller rotates of itself with the engine cut off. The points O<1>, O1<1> can be moved separately and when they are not in the same relative positions with respect to 0 a couple is produced in some plane containing the axis 0 O. The centres O<1>, O1<1> are moved by guides 16, 17, 16<1>, 17<1>, Fig. 9, controlled by wires 18 - - 21, 18<1> - - 21<1>. The wheel 4 is keyed to a rotatable shaft 5 carrying pulleys 6, 7 and pivoted at 8 to a shaft 9. The shaft 9 is unable to rotate but rocks about a ball and socket 9<a>. Two propellers may be arranged side by side, rotating in the same or opposite directions. Alternatively two propellers may be mounted on a common shaft. These mav be of equal size or, as shown in Fig. 11, the forward one may be large and the rear one small. In this case the larger one moves the centre of gravity of the machine and the smaller one causes it to pivot about the centre of gravity. A screw propeller 26 of variable pitch may be clutched to the same shaft.
