Abstract
The inner face of a channel member 1, is provided a pair of ribs 4 which bear onto the top face of a windscreen wiper blade rubber insert 3. This gives good vertical dimensional stability to the wiper rubber insert 3 and improves the longitudinal strength of the vertebra. A "boot" sleeve 5 protects working parts (not shown) of the windscreen wiper blade to which the vertebra 1 is attached.
Description
Imrovements relating to Vertebra for Windscreen Wipers
For windscreen wiper blades which are to be used in harsh winter conditions there has been developed a covering boot" sleeve which is fitted around the working parts of the windscreen wiper blade so as to prevent the entry of water or snow which could freeze and cause the mechanism to become locked. This invention is concerned with means for ensuring that the vertebra for such a construction has good stability.
According to the present invention there is provided a vertebra for retaining a wiper rubber insert for a windscreen wiper blade and comprising a channel with a mouth to one side for the rubber insert to pass through, with the inner face of the channel facing the mouth carrying at least one longitudinally extending centrally located rib to bear on the top face of the rubber insert.
The incorporation of the rib strengthens the top wall of the vertebra but nevertheless leaves sufficient room for a boot sleeve to be inserted, whilst achieving good vertical dimensional stability of the vertebra and wiper rubber insert. The rib improves the moment of inertia in the vertical plane, thus giving a better load distribution along the length of the wiper rubber.
In the preferred design a longitudinal rib pair is formed on the inner face of the channel facing the mouth.
This improves the stability of the vertebra and provides a more balanced loading onto the top face of the wiper rubber insert.
The invention further extends to a vertebra of the invention as hereinbefore defined in combination with a wiper rubber insert, positioned along the length of the channel.
The vertebra and wiper rubber insert combination may additionally incorporate a covering "boot" sleeve, located about the vertebra and passing around the sides of the vertebra and into the channel between the rubber insert and the interior of the channel.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:- Figure 1 is a sectional view through a vertebra of this invention incorporating a wiper rubber insert and a boot sleeve.
In the arrangement shown in Figure 1 a vertebra (for a windscreen wiper blade assembly) is provided in the form of a channel member 1. At the lower face this opens out into a mouth 2 through which part of a wiper blade insert 3 will pass. OnSthe inner face of the channel member 1, facing the mouth 2 there is provided a pair of ribs 4 which bear onto the top face of the rubber insert 3. This gives good vertical dimensional stability to the wiper rubber insert 3.
It also gives improved longitudinal strength to the vertebra. A "boot" sleeve 5 can be incorporated into the assembly to protect working parts (not shown) of the windscreen wiper blade to which the vertebra 1 is attached.
During assembly the boot sleeve 5 is inserted into the channel member 1 and the rubber insert 3 is slid longitudinally into position. Despite the presence of the protruding ribs 4 there is plenty of space within the channel 1 to receive the flexible boot sleeve 5.
Claims (5)
1. A vertebra for retaining a wiper rubber insert for a windscreen wiper blade and comprising a channel with a mouth to one side for the rubber insert to pass through, with the inner face of the channel facing the mouth carrying at least one longitudinally extending centrally located rib to bear on the top face of the rubber insert.
2. A vertebra according to Claim 1, wherein a longitudinal rib pair is formed on the inner face of the channel facing the mouth.
3. A vertebra according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, together with a wiper rubber insert positioned along the length of the channel.
4. A vertebra and wiper rubber combination according to Claim 3, including a covering "boot" sleeve located about the vertebra and passing round the sides of the vertebra and into the channel between the rubber insert and the interior of the channel.
5. A vertebra assembly substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
