Abstract

A system comprising of two units, a strip (Figures 1 and 2) and a junction piece (Figure 3), which provide a method of containing and concealing wiring, combined with the means of fitting carpet. The units combine a method of location against skirting boards which also protects against the incursion of drafts and dust, a housing to contain carpet gripper 4 and a channel 7 with a hinged flap 9 which when closed contains and protects wiring. The units are joined by running gripper across the joints. They are fixed to the floor by nails passing through the gripper and the unit base, or by gluing the gripper to the base and the base to the floor.

Description

HOUSING FOR WIRING AND CARPET GRIPPER This invention relates to a housing for wiring and carpet gripper.
Wiring has often been hidden under fitted carpets. This practice is often unsatisfactory as wiring can be nicked when carpet is being fitted or damaged by movement above the carpet. With .he increasing sophistication of stereo music and television systems and more common fitting of burglar alarms it is desirable to have a safe and convenient method of concealing wiring under carpet.
This invention provides a system comprising two units, a strip and a junction piece, which enable the wiring to be safely contained in an accessible chanel, houses the carpet gripper and provides a locating lug which will in most situations give some protection against the incursion of drafts and dust.
This invention and its application is now described with reference to accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows in profile the construction of the unit.
Figure 2 shows an overhead view of the strip section.
Figure 3 shows an overhead view of the junction box.
Referring to the drawing the invention comprises of two units, a strip FIG 2 and junction box FIG 3.
The strip, (FIG 2) is shown in cross section in FIG 1. It consists of a base plate 1, which houses carpet gripper. To one side is a locating lug 2 which provides a location point and a banier against the incursion of draughts and dust. To the other side is the wiring housing comprising an inner wall 5, outer wall 6, space for wiring 7, an integral hinge 8 and attached flap 9 enables the wires to be completely enclosed.
Where wire is required to surface from or descend under the carpet a junction piece FIG 3 is used. This has the same profile as the strip unit but incorporates a central channel 10 to enable wires to be fed back to the skirting board.
The units are used in the following way. The junction pieces FIG 3 being aligned and fitted by exactly the same method as the strip sections FIG 2. The base plate 1 is positioned on the floor with the locating lug 2 pushed up against the skirting board 3. The unit is affixed to the floor by means of the carpet gripper 4, which is positioned against the inner housing 5 and nailed into place. The units are joined by running gripper across the joins of the sections. If the floor surface should be unsuitable for nails then as is common practice in carpet laying the unit should be glued to the floor and the gripper glued within the unit. Carpet underlay is abutted to the exterior of the unit 6. Wires are laid into the space in the housings 7 or 10. The flap 9 is closed over the housing to contain the wires.
Carpet is laid over the unit and fitted on the gripper in the normal way by tucking down between the gripper and skirting board.

Claims (5)

1. A system comprising an strip section and a junction box which provide a housing for carpet gripper and an enclosed housing for wiring and a locating lug.
2. A system as in Claim 1 wherein the locating lug provides a means of location and a barrier against the incursion of drafts and dust.
3. A system as in Claim 1 and 2 whereby flap provides for complete closure of the wiring housing.
4. A system as In Claim 1, 2 and 3 whereby the base plate provides a housing for carpet gripper and the means of aligning and fixing the strips and junction boxes.
5. A system comprising a strip and a junction box substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
