Abstract

A portable desk-top stapler has a stapler mechanism 10 at one end of a first lower arm which cooperates with an anvil 12 at the end of a second upper arm which provides a base for the device. The two arms are pivoted at their ends 13 remote from the stapler mechanism and anvil. The separation between pivot and other ends is sufficient for the device to accommodate large documents. The pivot axis is normal to the general plane of the staples.

Description

PATENT APPLICATION for:- a. Portable (Office) Stapler for larae documents This application is for a portable stapler (commonly known as 'desk-top' or 'office') capable of stapling the spine of a large document. Conventional 'desk-top' staplers are limited to stapling items of which the width (ie the dimension at right-angles to the spine) is no greater than the length of the stapler arm between staple and hinge.
In the proposed design the 'body', i.e.the part which contains the staples and mechanism, is detached from the base carrying the anvil. The body and base are each attached to separate arms which are at right-angles to the body, i.e.
these arms are parallel to the staple axis.
These arms are hinged together at the extremity furthest from the stapler body, the hinge pin being parallel to the stapler i.e. at right-angles to the arms and hence at rightangles to the axis of the individual staples. Thus, when stapling the spines of documents, the stapler reaches in from the top or bottom of the spine, so that staples can be inserted irrespective of the width of the document, i.e. the dimension at right-angles to the spine. Also, because it is normally not necessary to insert staples at the very centre of the spine, a modestly sized stapler can accomodate quite a long spine length. e.g. A stapler having an arm 25 cm between staple and hinge could staple a document having a spine of 75 cm or more.
The operating mechanism itself could be identical to that of existing conventionally hinged 'desk-top' staplers, or of a different design, and does not form part of this application.

Claims (5)

1. A portable stapler comprising a stapling mechanism, of any suitable type, the body of which (containing the staples and mechanism) is separate from the anvil, both body and anvil being attached to individual arms. These arms are hinged at the extremity remote from the body and anvil, with the hinge-pin axis at right-angles to the axes of the individual staples.
2. A portable stapler as claimed in Claim 1, with a measuring rule inscribed upon, or attached to, the pivot arm, to facilitate accurate positioning of staples.
3. A portable stapler as claimed in Claim 1 or in Claim 2, in which the arms are detachable from the body and/or anvil to reduce overall dimensions when dismantled. e,g, for packaging.
4. A portable stapler as claimed in Claim 1, or Claim 2, or Claim 3, in which the hinge is designed to allow wider clearance for thick documents.
5. A portable stapler, as described herein, with reference to Figures 1 to 5 of the accompanying drawing.
