Abstract
A motorised system which drives either rotating arms(s) 1 or traversing rod(s) or wire(s) 8 to scare, disturb or deter birds from perching on surfaces or structures. The system comprises a low speed electric motor which drives rotating arms(s) (1 and 2) via a spindle or a traversing rod (8) controlled by a programmable timer. The rod may traverse either vertically or horizontally, The system may be mounted on a roof of a building, or may be portable for use in other applications.
Description
A BIRD SCARER
This invention relates to a bird scarer.
Birds and the mess and damage they can leave are a major problem, especially in cities, with crops in farming, and in fisheries.
There are several current methods of preventing the problem, but all suffer some form of drawback(s).
This invention presents an environmentally acceptable, silent, humane, non damaging, cheap, flexible, and reliable deterrent system to the problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a system to keep birds, typically pigeons, seagulls and starlings off building roofs. The system could, however, equally be applied to other situations.
The invention provides a moving arm of rod and/or thin wire that traverses, rotates or otherwise covers an area, and that will on contacting a bird alarm it, scare it or deter it from settling on the covered area, without causing actual bodily harm.
This may take the form typically but no exclusively of: 1. A rotating mechanism or 2. A traversing mechanism
The arms of each would typically be composed of a thin rod and/or in whole or part a length of wire, which in turn may be metal or plastic.
Three specific embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
EMBODIMENT 1
Figure 1 shows in perspective two rotating arms covering a house roof
Figure 2 illustrates the rotating arm in isolation.
Figure 3 shows the electric motor attached to the inside of the roof trusses by a bracket with the
spindle protruding through the roof to the outside.
Figure 4 shows a section through the roof
EMBODIMENT 2
Figure 5 shows a moving rod/rods wire/wires traversing a roof horizontally.
Figure 6 shows a moving rod/rods, wire/wires traversing a roof vertically.
EMBODIMENT 3
Figure 7 shows a portable outdoor scarer.
.eferring to the drawing:
In figures 1 to 4, a low speed electric motor 4, drives a rotating arm 1 via a spindle 6. The motor 4 is situated inside the roof space and attached to the roof eaves 3 via a bracket 5.
The arm 1 is a thin section rod, possibly with a length of wire or line 2 attached to each end.
The rod wire or line, on rotation, touches any birds situated on the roof and scares them off. Such a device will also have a deterent value but not physically harm the bird.
The motor may run continually, or have a timed control, or be actuated by other sensing devices or methods.
In the second embodiment of the invention.
In figure 5, guide rails 7 have a rod/rods and or wire/wires connected across them and are again powered by an electric motor. The connecting rod/rods and or wire/wires traverse the roof vertically disturbing, scaring and deterring settling birds.
In figure 6 these guide rails 9 provide for a horizontal sweep of the roof
By combining these 3 methods of moving rod/rods wire/wires ie rotating, vertical sweep and horizontal sweep, it will be possible to so equip any design of building roof so as to prevent birds settling.
Figure 7 shows a portable version of the rotating scarer for use in fields, on domestic gardens, perhaps, but not necessarily operated by batteries, wind or solar energy. This is positioned by a stake 10, in the ground 11, such a device could also be installed in ponds.
Claims (5)
1. A motorised system to keep birds off building roofs and other situations, including a moving arm/arms and or wire/wires.
2.A motorised system as in Claim I,which is fixed to or through the roof, where the moving arm/arms and/or wire/wires that traverse, rotate or otherwise cover an area, disturbs, scares or deters settling bids.
3,A motorised system as in Claim 2 which is mountable on other structures or surfaces.
4.A motorised system as in Claim 2 which is portable and can be used in gardens, ponds, boats and other situations.
5.An arm/wire made of metal or plastic,or any combination of these materials as claimed in any preceding claim.
