Abstract
Each coupling device for securing a container to a vehicle, comprises a rotatable securing pin and a load platform arranged to telescope into a fixed casing to compress a rubber block to an extent determined by the load on that device, so as to give a visual indication of the weight and its distribution.
Description
WEIGHT LOCK
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A LOCKING/WEIGHING DEVICE.THE DEVICE BEING
FOR THE PURPOSE OF BOTH SECURING A DEMOUNTABLE OR I.S.O.CONTAINER TO
A VEHICLE CHASSIS.THE DEVICE NORMALLY USED FOR THIS PURPOSE IS KNOWN
AS A TWIST LOCK,AND THE INVENTION WILL BE EXPLAINED IN RELATION TO
THAT.
A TWIST LOCK IS A DEVICE THAT IS GENERALLY MADE OF METAL,IT IS
USUALLY A CAST STEEL BODY FORMED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO ALLOW THE
LOCATION OF A LOAD CARRYING PLATFORM TO A VEHICLE,ONCE LOCATED THE
TWIST LOCK HAS A CENTRAL LOCKING PIN THAT ROTATES TO LOCK THE LOAD
PLATFORM AND CARRYING VEHICLE TOGETHER.ALTHOUGH PERFECTLY EFFECTIVE
AT ITS TASK,TWIST LOCKS ONLY OFFER THIS ONE SERVICE.
A MAJOR PROBLEM OFF THE
TRANSPORTATION OF CARGOES USING THE METHOD OF DEMOUNTABLE/CONTAINERS
IS THAT DUE TO WORLDWIDE MOVEMENTS THESE UNITS ARE SEALED CLOSED AT
THE LOADING POINT,AND FROM THAT POINT ON IT IS RARE FOR THE CARGO
TO BE WEIGHED OR INSPECTED.THIS METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION RELYS UPON
CONSIGNOR TO DECLARE THE WEIGHT,SAFE POSITIONING AND SECURITY OF THE
LOADS FIXING.IF IN THE EVENT THAT ANY OF THE ABOVE ARE NOT ADHERED
TO STRICTLY,THE EVENTUAL OUTCOME IS A VEHICLE THAT IS UNSAFE.
AGAINST THIS BACKGROUND,ONE ASPECT OF THE INVENTION IS TO PROVIDE A LOCKING
DEVICE THAT ALSO OFFERS THE CAPABILITIES OF VISUALLY SHOWING THE
WEIGHT PLACED UPON EACH FIXING POINT OF THE CARGO PLATFORM TIS THEN
ALLOWS INSTANT RECOGNITION OF GROSS WEIGHT OF THE CARGO BY ADDING
TOGETHEP THE AEIGHT SHOWN AT EACH LOCK.ALSO WETHER THE LOAD HAS BEEN 'icillt , @@@@@@@@@ ACROSS IHi- LOAD PLA OPPx; THE INVENTION IS DESIGNED TO REPLACE THE USE OF EXISTING TWIST
LOCKS,AND CANNOT BE USED IN CONJUCTION WITH.
TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED
NEEDS FROM THE INVENTION,AND TO ENABLE THE INVENTION TO WORK
SATISFACTORILY WITHOUT CONSTANT MAINTENANCE A SIMPLE DESIGN HAS
BEEN DEVISED AS FOLLOWS;
THE MAIN BODY IS MANUFACTURED IN TWO PARTS,
THE LOWER PART BEING KNOWN AS THE (LOWER CASING)THE LOWER CASING
IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW BOTH THE FIXING OF THE WEIGHT LOCK TO THE LOAD
CARRYING STRUCTURE OF THE VEHICLE BY MEANS OF BOTH BOLTS AND PINS.
THE SECOND FUNCTION OF THE LOWER CASING BEING TO PROVIDE AN OUTER
PISTON CASING.THE UPPER PART OF THE BODY BEING KNOWN AS THE(UPPER
CASING) THE UPPER CASING PROVIDES BOTH THE LOAD CARRYING PLATFORM
AND THE INNER PISTON.THE THIRD PART OF THE MECHANISM IS THE CENTRE
PIN,THIS DEVICE HAS THE DUAL FUNCTION OF LOCKING THE CONTAINER OR
DEMOUNT BODY TO THE CARRYING VEHICLE,AND ALSO ENSURES THAT THE
UPPER AND LOWER CASINGS CANNOT SEPERATE WHILST IN SERVICE.THE FINAL
PART OF THE DEVICE IS A PRE SIZED BLOCK OF NATURAL RUBBER,THIS
BLOCK IS THE CENTRAL PART OF THE DEVICE,THE RUBBER BLOCK PROVIDES
A STABLE MATERIAL ALLOWING ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF ITS DEFLECTlON.
THE LOWER CASING PROVIDES A VERTICAL HOLLOW MANUFACTURED TO A PRE
DETERMINED SIZE,THE BOTTOM OF THIS HOLLOW HAVING AN OPEN END AND
A CLOSED END.THE CLOSED END HAVING A PRE SIZED HOLE ALLOWING FOR
THE CENTRE PIN TO PASS THROUGH.
THE UPPER CASING HAS A PRE DETERMINED VERTICAL HOLLOW,THIS HOLLOW
HAS AN OPEN END AND A CLOSED END,THE CLOSED END HAVING A PRE SIZED
HOLE ALLOWING FOR THE CENTRE PIN TO PASS THROUGH.
THE PRE SIZED RUBBER BLOCK IS LOCATED WITHIN THE HOLLOW OF THE
UPPER CASING,THE INNER CASING IS THEN INSERTED INTO THE LOWER CASING
THE RUBBER BLOCK HEIGHT BEING GREATER THAN THAT OF THE INNER CASING
INHIBITS THE UPPER AND LOWER CASINGS TOUCHING VERTICALY.THE LATERAL
MOVEMENT OF THE CASINGS BEING INHIBITED BY THIER SIZE,AND THE USE OF
AN ANTI FRICTION LUBRICANT.
THE CENTRE PIN IS LOCATED THROUGH THE UPPER CASING,THE RUBBER BLOCK
AND THE LOWER CASING,THIS IS THEN FASTENED AT THE LOWER END BY A
SUITABLE METHOD.I.E.WELDING OR MECHANICAL FASTNING.
WHEN AFFIXED TO THE LOAD CARRYING VEHICLE THE LOAD CARRYING PART OF
THE UPPER CASING ARE IN THE HORIZONTAL POSITION.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE DEVICE ALLOWS FOR THE PISTON TYPE MOVEMENT
OF THE UPPER AND LOWER CASINGS,THE INTRUSION OF THE RUBBER BLOCK
DURING THIS TRAVEL MEANS THAT TRAVEL CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY THE
INTRODUCTION OF PRESSURE.PRESSURE IS INTRODUCED BY THE WEIGHT OF
THE LOAD RESTED UPON THE UPPER CASING.DEPENDENT UPON THE WEIGHT INTRODl3CED,THE RUBBER WILL BE COMPRESSED.THE INNER CASING HAS AN
EXTERNAL INDICATOR ARM THAT SLIDES UP AND DOWN OVER THE OUTER CASE.
ITS MOVEMENT IS DETERMINED BY THE PRESSURE APPLiED AND BY A SCALED MARKED @@@@ INDICATES THE WEIGHT APPLIED.

1. A DEVICE TO SECURE A DEMOUNTABLE/CONTAINER BODY TO A CARRYING
VEHICLE.BY USE OF THE DEMOUNTABLE/CONTAINERS STANDARD 1.S.O.
EQUIPMENT.
2. A DEVICE HAVING THE ABILITY TO ENABLE VISUALLY THE WEIGHT
IMPOSED UPON IT BY MEANS OF A COMPRESSION MEASUREMENT
INDICATOR.
3. A DEVICE HAVING WITHIN ITS CONSTRUCTiON A NATURAL RUBBER
BLOCK FOR THE PURPOSE OF MEASUREMENT.
4. A DEVICE HAVING WITHIN ITS CONSTRUCTION A NATURAL RUBBER
BLOCK FOR THE PURPOSE OF ABSORBING SHOCK TRANSFER BETWEEN
THE CARRYING VEHICLE AND ITS CARGO.
5. A WEIGHING DEVICE AS CLAIMED IN ANY PRECEDING CLAIM WHEREIN
THE RESILIENT MEANS IS FORMED OF NATURAL RUBBER.
