Abstract
The end of a length of pipe 15 whose outer surface presents axially spaced circumferential ribs separated by circumferential grooves is coupled with a receiving socket 10 comprising at least one pair of opposed lateral bores in the wall of the socket by a pin 17 adapted to extend through said bores to lie tangentially against the pipe within one of said circumferential grooves.
Description
Pipe Connection Means
This invention concerns means for connecting the end of a pipe of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) whose outer surface presents axially spaced circumferential ribs separated by circumferential grooves with a receiving socket.
According to the present invention means for connecting the end of a length of pipe of the kind referred to with a receiving socket comprises at least one pair of opposed bores in the wall of the socket and a pin adapted to extend through said bores to lie tangentially against the pipe (when engaged with the socket) within one of said circumferential grooves to prevent withdrawal of the pipe from the socket.
There may be two pairs of bores and two pins adapted to engage the pipe at opposite ends of a diameter thereof.
The socket may have an internal flange forming an abutment for the end of the pipe to ensure that when the pipe is cut in prescribed manner the bores in the socket will be aligned with a circumferential groove.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, one form of connecting means embodying same.
Of the drawing
Figure 1 shows a partially cut-away perspective view
of a socket member for connecting the ends oftwo lengths of pipe; and
Figure 2 shows a cross-section through one half of the
connection.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that a tubular member 10 has oppositely directed cylindrical sockets 11 and 12 separated by an inwardly directed circumferential flange 13.
The sockets 11 and 12 are adapted to receive the ends oftwo lengths ofpipe 14 and 15 to form a connection therebetween. The pipe is of the kind whose outer surface presents axially spaced circumferential ribs separated by circumferential grooves.
In each ofthe sockets 11 and 12 are two pairs of opposed bores 16 adapted to receive pins 17 therethrough.
The pins 17 lie tangentially against the ends of the pipe 14 and 15 within the circumferential grooves to lock the pipe against withdrawal from the member 10.
The flange 13 provides an abutment for the ends of the pipe to ensure that the bores 16 are aligned with circumferential grooves provided that the pipe is cut to length in a prescribed manner.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
Claims (2)
1. Means for connecting the end of a length of pipe whose outer surface presents axially spaced circumferential ribs separated by circumferential grooves with a receiving socket comprising at least one pair of opposed bores in the wall of the socket and a pin adapted to extend through said bores to lie tangentially against the pipe (when engaged with the socket) within one of said circumferential grooves to prevent withdrawal of the pipe from the socket.
2. Means according to claim 1 having two pairs of bores and two pins adapted to engage the pipe at opposite ends of a diameter thereof.
3 Means according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the socket has internal flange forming an abutment for the end of the pipe to ensure that when the pipe is cut in prescribed manner the bores in the socket will be aligned with a circumferential groove.
4 Means according to claim 3 wherein there is a socket to either side of the internal flange to enable two lengths of the pipe to be connected.
