Abstract
A traffic separator 10 is moulded of plastics and has spaced wheels 30 or a single roller, and handle slot 31 by which the separator can be part-lifted for movement on the wheels. A cord 23 has ends 24, 25 and can be used to selectively connect adjacent separators and can be stowed in a groove on the separator. Each separator has an end formation for engaging a groove of an adjacent separator.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TRAFFIC SEPARATORS
THIS INVENTION relates to traffic separators.
According to this invention a traffic separator has wheel means on which it can be moved.
There may be laterally spaced wheels.
The separator may comprise a handle by which the separator can be part-lifted from the ground for movement on the wheel means.
The wheel means may be at or adjacent one end of the separator and the handle at or adjacent the other end.
The separator may have formations at its ends cooperable with formations at the ends of similar separators to assist in positioning adjacent separators relative to each other. The formations may be co-operable by endwise movement.
Elongate means may be provided for selectively connecting adjacent separators to resist separating movement.
There may be means for stowing the elongate means.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a traffic separator;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a barrier formed from a line of separators; and
Fig. 4 is a part view underneath.
A traffic separator 10 comprises a moulded plastics elongate body 11 which is generally hollow and has a lower part in the form of a peripheral wall 12 providing an upwardly facing surface 13 and an upper part 14 which tapers inwards on its inner and outer surfaces as it extends upwards to a flat top 15.
Similar separators 10 can be stacked on top of each other with the underface 16 of the wall 12 of an upper separator 10 resting on the face 13 of a lower separator 10 and the upper part 14 of the lower separator received in the upper part 14 of the upper separator.
The wall 12 can be in spaced portions 12a to reduce weight with the wall between portions 12a either missing (Fig. 3) or of reduced thickness (Fig. 1).
One end of wall 12 has a small V-section recess 17 and the other end has a corresponding projection 18 so that adjacent separators 10 can be positioned in a line, which can be somewhat curved, to form a barrier to or between traffic, which may include pedestrians.
Vertical apertures or recesses 20, 21, 22 are formed in the top and a flexible cord 23 with rigid end portions 24, 25 is of such a length that portion 24 can be located in aperture 22 of one separator and portion 25 in adjacent aperture 20 of an adjacent separator, with the cord 23 substantially taut, to assist in holding the adjacent separators in line. When not in use the cord 23 can be parked or stowed on its associated separator with elements 24, 25 in apertures 20, 21 and the cord 23 taut; a groove 26 may receive the cord 23 in this position.
Adjacent one end of the separator 10 are laterally spaced wheels 30 mounted in the wall 12. The separator 10 has a handle 31 at the other end by which that end may be lifted and the part-lifted separator moved on the wheels 30. In the example shown, the handle 31 is in the form of a slot aperture 33. The wheels 30 may rotate about a fixed axis at right-angles to the length of the separator or may be freely movable castors.
The separator 10 is quite heavy and provision of wheels and handle assists in moving and positioning the separator.
As shown in Fig. 4, the wall 12 may in part have inner portions 40 supporting wheel axles 30a.
Instead of laterally spaced wheels there could be a single wheel towards one end for example a roller-type wheel with a flat tread.
